The Walking Dead made a surprising appearance on Jeopardy last week!
The final question? “George Romero declined to direct a few episodes of this series, calling it ‘basically… just a soap opera.’”
Obviously, to all of us, the answer couldn’t be clearer: “What is The Walking Dead?” Even if you’re not a Walking Dead fan, George Romero is a legend in the zombie genre. Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead… perhaps something else “Dead” would fit?
However, not everyone could put the two things together. One contestant, focusing on the ‘soap opera’ element, guessed “The Bachelor.”
And, most importantly, he bet $9,000 on it.
Ouch.
This picture is most likely what every TWD fan is thinking.
That guy WOULD be watching The Bachelor & not TWD!
“Basically just a soap opera.” You know, coming from someone as important to the zombie genre as Romero, that feels like a very deep insult.
he’s right though, the tv show isn’t even that good. apart from the first series, as soon as darabont was fired it went down hill
We need an animated series that follows the comic much more closely. Give Darabont creative control. I’d support this fully.
I could get behind an animated series. but in the same world not following the main group. that could be cool.
Nah, nah. That’s what the spinoff show is for. If we got a cartoon it needs to be the comic animated.
I love Darabont, but I have to disagree with your thinking that the show “isn’t even that good”. Even after Darabont’s ousting, the show took a hit, but to me, it’s still better than all the other shows I’ve watched in the past as well as my current lineup!
As for Romero, he’s all about the zombie instead of the people affected by them. It’s the blood, guts, gore, reanimation, decay, screams, killing, etc. That’s not what TWD is all about & that’s why Romero is not interested. It’s not the quality of the show he has issues with, it’s the focus.
this is unreal. my fathers films have aways made the humans out to be the real monsters. the zombies are a tool to push the story along. have you ever even seen one of his movies??? ridiculous.
Well, the only movies I can think of right off hand with zombified animals were the Pet Sematary movies…neither of which are “your father’s”. So yeah, humans were the real monsters & I’ve seen plenty of Romero’s movies to know where he’s coming from. Not only that, I’ve read what he’s said in interviews. So……
I agree. I’m a much bigger fan of Telltale’s game version, to be honest.
well i’m suprised i didn’t have a bunch of tv show fans complaining at me. I love Telltale, they truely understand what the walking dead is about, while the tv show doesn’t.
i watch a hell of a lot of other tv shows and i can say there is so many better ones out there. Hannibal, Arrow, Orange is the new black, Person Of Interest. i can keep going but i won’t.
I would love an animated series, imagine if they use the same artwork as the comic. or get a team to have something similar but their own thing so they can diverse from the comics correctly like Darabont did.
wow what a dick, a soap ??? Someone is drinking the HATERADE
Yes he is taking haterism to new levels.
slipping ever so softly into senility lol
Oh please Romero. You wouldn’t know an actual storyline if it “came up and bit you on the ass”…Characters who are living and surviving in a zombie apocolypse is something Romero has no clue about. Yeah, so “Night of the Living Dead” is a so called “classic”…in 1968 it was. But this is 2014 pal…And cheap makeup, poor filming and crummy acting won’t cut it anymore. People are smarter and expect a real story about real people. TWD delievers.
Hell yea I do agree with that its not the 60’s 70’s and 80’s anymore yes its 2012 things changes during the years I I love watching the walking dead its a really great tv series and I can’t wait till October gets here and the walking dead comes back on 🙂
its 2012 !!!!! oh crap I have to warn people about Negan!!! 🙂
Bwhhhhaaaaahahahahahaha!!
I see what you are saying he was out of line but Night of the Living Dead , Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead are all classic’s .. Romero started the zombie genre he is a horror icon . He shouldn’t of said what he said but he is still should be still respected if you are a true zombie fan .
Exactly, without Romero, would there even be a walking dead? he deserves our respect as zombie fans, but he should show it to others too!
Yes I totally agree he should .
Thats my dad, and i can tell you he didn’t say it with a sneer spitting the words soap opera into someones face lol… but, the show is in all honesty a soap opera.
“Characters who are living and surviving in a zombie apocolypse is something Romero has no clue about” unbelievable. Its obvious you know nothing.
Say what ? Out of all the comments you choose me I never disrespected him at all . It’s obvious you can blow me .
So who is he talking about that “knows nothing”? Seems to me, he’s attacking the very few on this thread that support “his father” (yeah, uh huh).
I think he is talking about Cindy .
Yeah, looks like it, now that I went back & read it. I just spouted off, since he hit me with a snide remark.
The post was confusing to me .
He called TWD a “very lame TV show”….I’d say he’s confused.
TWD is the best show ever in my eyes .
I don’t think Romero’s REAL son would knock TWD like that, despite Romero’s decision not to get involved with the show (he still has respect for Kirkman & loves the comic, from what I’ve read). If so, Daddy must’ve unclaimed him.
hopefully we will find out .
Does your dad have any issues with Kirkman ?
One question also how could of it been a classic in 1968 ? Google the word classic .
The trouble with Romero is that while he may have created the zombie mythology as we know it today, he hasn’t done anything relevant for a long time. he will always hold a special place with me for setting me on my life long Zombie obsession when I first watched “dawn of the dead” but to disrespect The Walking Dead, Not cool George, just not cool!
Romero is a legend .. With that being said his opinion is just that a opinion I feel Kirkman has created a extremely awesome series and I see a little jealously coming from Romero. They should collaborate . Romero said this almost a year ago Jeopardy is kinda shady for bringing this up .. Kirkman is awesome for not going at Romero .
My dad (George Andrew Romero) practically invented the zombie. He’s old, and he’s done making movies. Why should he direct a VERY LAME TV SHOW that he didn’t even write. you gotta understand, my dad gets offers like this ALL the time. I watched the whole first season which was good… But every time i turn it on its like the characters are stuck in the same scenario over and over… and it is a soap opera, with brief moments of zombie slaying.
I’m calling bullshit on him even being your dad, soo…
