Kevin Miller, screenwriter and director, writes about horror tropes, and how The Walking Dead is part of a new breed, that taps into something new:
“So perhaps by domesticating the zombie, the creators of The Walking Dead have inadvertently stumbled upon the new cutting edge of horror. It’s no longer a supernatural or extra-terrestrial invasion or any sort of “evil other.” The true horror is literally the “man/woman in the mirror,” or rather, what the man/woman in the mirror becomes when the vestiges of technology and civilization are no longer able to mask the evil that lurks within.”
Interesting article but this guy states “domesticating the zombie” & compares The Walking Dead in that regard to Twilight & True Blood. That’s a little off. I understand the whole theory behind the article but those walkers are hardly domesticated.
i don’t think this guy knows exactly what he is talking about because he says in the artical that the walkers are not a threat anymore and that’s not true and he also goes on to say that the way the disease is transmitted is through a bite from a walker and that’s not true because everyone is already infected “no matter what we all turn” i think that it is just this guys opinion and hell we all got one but he is just going off on some philosophical rant where he feels he knows the opinion of the masses and what all the fans want but just because he feels that way or thinks that does not mean we all do
I think he’s trying to say that the zombies are about as realistic as can be in the fictional apocalyptic world compared to other depictions of Zombies with super strength, speed, etc.
You ever seen Twilight and/or True Blood? These characters walk around under cover for the most part….no threat to most of the population. That’s domesticated, as he calls it. Although there’s drama surrounding the characters in Twilight or Blood, the threat is not that they are vampires, werewolves, witches, whatever, it’s with their relationships and other people. He’s trying to say that The Walking Dead follows in the same suit but one major detail that he’s missing out on is that the walkers are NOT domesticated…they are a threat. The story is not about man vs. zombie; the story is about how man survives in a post apocalyptic world. His article would have been dead on if he would’ve left The Walking Dead out of it!
TWD should never, EVER, be compared to friggin’ twilight. Wow, just, Wow.
True Blood either! Never even bothered to watch Twilight (some things you just know ain’t for you)…started watching True Blood but that got too Twilight-ish for me.
