The Walking Dead will wrap up several storylines before the Season 8 Finale – and that’s welcome news to fans who have gotten accustomed to the usual end-of-season cliffhangers. Among those storylines are Carl’s letters, which have been read periodically throughout the second half of the season. In Episode 815, fans got to hear arguably the most anticipated one – Carl’s letter to Negan. It was relayed to him through Michonne at the end of the episode. We included the transcript below:
“Negan, this is Carl. I was helping someone. I got bit. We didn’t even have to be doing what we were doing. I was just helping someone and now I’m gone. You might be gone. Maybe my dad made your people give you up and he killed you, but I don’t think so. I think you’re still around and you’re working on a way out. Maybe you got out. Maybe you think we’re a lost cause and you just want to kill all of us.
I think you think you have to be who you are. I just wonder if this is what you wanted. I wanted to ask you. I wish I could have. Maybe you’ll beat us. And if you do, they’ll just be someone else to fight. The way out is working together. It’s forgiveness. It’s believing that it doesn’t have to be a fight anymore. Because it doesn’t. I hope my dad offers you peace. I hope you take it. I hope everything can change. It did for me. Start over. You still can. — Carl”
After hearing this Negan tells Michonne that there will NOT be peace and killing every last one of them will be winning to him. He then says, “No more talking” and smashes his walkie talkie – signaling the beginning of the final battle. Even though Carl’s letters are unique to the show, what he says in them hints at a major comic storyline. At the end of All Out War in the comics, Rick and Negan’s groups face off one last time. Rick slits Negan’s throat but ultimately decides to save him, declaring that they’re better than Negan and don’t need to stoop to his level.
This sort of move would satisfy Carl’s wishes in the show, but can Rick or Negan actually bring themselves to offer the other peace? You’ll just have to wait and find out during The Walking Dead Season 8 Finale.
Carl went through a lot for a person his age..but he was young and still had not experienced a lot. Human nature is tricky and changes with the environment and challenges presented to it. I appreciated his sincere but naive letters….just kill the bad guys.
Awesome that it has been posted here for our reading pleasure!
