“Out of the Ashes”
A LOT going on this episode. It starts with a literal nightmare for Aaron and then continues to be a figurative nightmare throughout. Aaron, Carol, Jerry, and Lydia head to the Hilltop to see if they can find any remaining tools and run into a group of surviving whisperers, which forces Aaron to confront his trauma after torturing one of them. Key takeaway is torturing did not work (Carol brings Aaron back from the brink), and the whisperer ends up telling them that he’s seen Connie alive.
Our Commonwealth crew find out that just maybe everything is as good as it seems, despite an agonizing amount of red tape. Yumiko is reunited with her brother while Eugene gets arrested for using the radio to phone home (with Stephanie’s help, so she’s also lived up to her promise of being a good person). We leave them with a possible reprieve while awaiting trial but we’ll see: “You’ll have to pay for what you’ve done, one way or another.”
Back home, Judith has some troubles with bullies and grapples with the fact that even at such a young age she’s dealt with A LOT of loss (seriously, Carl, Rick, Michonne…). Rosita is there to pick her up.
And last Negan and Maggie are holed up, waiting to see if anyone’s still alive from their group. We see that Negan believes in self-preservation vs Maggie’s belief in the good of the group. These last few episodes it seems like Negan’s way is the way to go, but at the very end Father Gabriel arrives, knowing other survivors would be at the safe house. So maybe Maggie wasn’t entirely wrong…
What did you guys think? You excited to see Connie again?! How will that play out? And what will Eugene and the gang have to do to stay in the Commonwealth’s good graces. Can we really trust them?
