MoviePilot recently spoke with Josh McDermitt (Dr. Eugene Porter) about landing his role on The Walking Dead, how playing Eugene has impacted his life and more!
When asked about his favorite character on the show, McDermitt said, “Before Eugene joined the show, one of my favorite characters was Morgan. It might be that I really enjoy the actor (Lennie James).” After he joined the show, though, his favorite became Sgt. Abraham Ford, played by Michael Cudlitz. “He’s a walking muscle,” McDermitt joked.
When asked how he came to audition for the role of Eugene, McDermitt said, “I have a comedy background and it took some convincing to get my manager and agent to agree to look for dramatic roles for me. I thought I’d have to do a lot of auditions before landing a dramatic role, but the audition for Eugene was one of my first for a dramatic role.”
Though he was a fan of the comics, he stopped reading them shortly after being cast!
“I didn’t want to be influenced by the comics,” McDermitt said. “I can only work with Eugene in the space the writers and producers give me and I didn’t want what I read to change how I might play the character.”
Eugene’s a pretty cool character in the show and awesome in the comics. I would like to see in the show Eugene actually knowing the cure and then getting killed before they are able to extract it from him. Or they could just make him a cowardly little lier.
His comic book character is under rated . I’m looking forward to his show character to get some shine this season .
Without Eugene, Alexandria would of been over run by zombies. He’s the one redirecting the zombies. Like Rick said, “He’s too important.”
Not to mention he makes ammo too.
My point exactly. Nice profile picture. Are you liking the new doctor?
Thanks. I like it so far, though I’m still adapting to his new attitude, all grumpy and serious. The complete opposite of eleven (my favorite).
I think Peter’s Doctor is just going through some growing pains. Similar to Tennant. I’m positive that he will start to fit in.
The most important job right now .. He seems to be Rick’s most trusted guy next to Jesus . Well I’m really not sure which one is closer to Rick .
I think him actually having a cure would inspire too much hope and give us a “bigger picture.” Because Eugene supposedly had connections.
I’d prefer him still be a liar like he was in the comics. Just another thing to hope for, only to have it become ashes in their mouth.
The show has looked at a cure now and then (CDC in S1). I wouldn’t be surprised if he does know the cure but gets killed or in comic book fashion, out right lie about the cure.
Grilled Cheese Party….that’s what we do.
Impromptu grilled cheese party, 1-2-3 go!!
Ah Eugene . . . you said you could save the words and you kind of did 🙂
