WHERE IS BETH?! We find out tonight on TWD! Keep reading for the full details! If you were hoping for an answer as to who’s in the woods with Daryl, well…
The show opens immediately on Beth, so that answers that question. Episode 4. Episode 4 is when we find out what happened to Beth. She is waking up in a hospital bend. Arm in a cast, sutures on her cheek. Clock ticking (seriously I have no idea how people sleep in rooms with clocks).
After banging on the locked door, a doctor and a cop enter the room. Meet Dr. Stephen Edwards and Officer Dawn Lerner. They tell Beth that she is in Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta and she was found on the road, wrist broken surrounded by walkers (“Rotters” as they call them). She was alone. In a very ominous tone Dawn tells Beth, “you owe us.” Intro music plays and we’re off to the credits.
Beth accompanies Stephen as he makes his rounds. His first stop is a man they found under a bridge. The doc unceremoniously pulls the plug and stabs his brain. Resources are scarce, if a patient doesn’t improve almost immediately they have to cut them off. They take the body for disposal. “Come on, the body’s getting cold,” Dawn says. They take the bodies and drop them down an elevator shaft to the basement. If the body is still warm the walkers take care of most of it.
When Beth gets food she runs into one of the men who “saved” her (Gorman). She doesn’t remember him but he’s kind of a creep. He reminds her that “everything” costs something as she gets her food and suggests that she be a bit friendlier.
On her way to the Dr. Edwards’ office, Beth passes Dawn’s office and hears Dawn lecture Noah (played by Tyler James Williams) about how to do her laundry.
When Dr. Edwards complains about being bored, Beth reminds him: “If you’re safe enough to be bored, you’re lucky.” Then they share some guinea pig.
Beth admires the painting in his office. It’s a Caravaggio that he found on the street. Specifically it’s “The Denial of Saint Peter,” painted around 1610. Currently it’s at The Met in NYC, but maybe it was on loan in Atlanta when all this went down.
A new patient is whisked in, Gavin Trevitt, who fell from a second floor window. The officer who brings him in whispers something to Dawn, who suddenly becomes much more involved. Dr. Edwards says that it’s a losing battle but Dawn insists that he try anyway. Things aren’t looking good. The doc shows Dawn his bruised stomach: too much internal bleeding. When the doc delivers the bad news Dawn turns and slaps Beth, re-opening her sutured cheek. “Try and grasp the stakes here.” Sooo, she’s a little crazy.
Dr. Edwards re-stitches Beth’s cheek and leaves so she can put on a fresh shirt that Noah left for her. She finds a lollipop in the pocket and smiles.
Beth walks down the hall and happens on another emergency victim: Joan, one of the “wards,” who’s been bitten. They need to amputate her arm but she’s refusing treatment. She was trying to leave the hospital. They make Beth help hold her down while they saw her arm off. It’s horrifying.
Beth goes to the laundry room with her bloody clothes and meets Noah, who left her the lollipop. Beth wonders why Joan would try to escape. Couldn’t she just work off her debt and leave? Noah informs her that they tend to save people that are weak and can’t fight (maybe they DID see Daryl and just left him behind). They save them and force them to stay until they’ve worked off their debt. Noah’s from a walled community in Richmond, Virginia. He and his father were rescued but they let his dad died and saved Noah, because his father would have been a threat. Noah says he’s sneaking out and heading back when he gets the chance.
Dawn brings Beth some food and Beth tells her she’s not staying any longer than they make her. Dawn tries to sell her on staying at the hospital. She thinks that the world will return to normal and it’s important to keep safety and order. Beth maintains that she wants to leave. She does eat though.
As she mops up blood in newly-amputated Joan’s room, Joan wakes up. She tells Beth that Dawn could control her men but she doesn’t because it’s easier. She won’t tell Beth what they did to her though. “It doesn’t matter. I guess it’s easier to make a deal with the devil when you’re not the one paying the price.”
Back in her room, Beth looks for her lollipop under the mattress. Officer Creepy, I mean Gorman, walks in sucking on it. “Lose something?” He offers Beth a taste and pushes it in her mouth. As he creeps out, Dr. Edwards comes in and breaks it up. “Girl should’ve been mine,” Gorman says. Dr. Edwards challenges him over his “ownership” of Joan, telling him that no one is anyone’s property. Dawn comes by and Gorman threatens the doctor saying Dawn won’t always be in charge. When they all leave, Beth asks the doctor why he stays. In response he takes her to the ground floor.
He bangs on the metal shutters with a pipe. Walkers immediately attack. Atlanta is a bad place to be.
Then they head up to the roof. Edwards tells her how it all started, with Atlanta destroyed, they started to trade care for service. The man in charge, Hanson, started to crack and got people killed. Dawn “took care of him” and kept them safe. “As bad as it gets, it’s still better than down there.” Recurring theme: power corrupts.
Dr. Edwards tells Beth to check on Mr. Trevitt and instructs her to give him 75mg of Clozapine. Beth goes down and injects it. Noah stops by just as Trevitt starts to seize and flatlines. When Dawn demands to know what happened, Noah takes the blame, saying he accidentally unplugged the ventilator. Dawn tells an officer to take Noah to her office. When Beth tries to explain what happened to Dr. Edwards he says, “You gave him Clonazepam, right?” He most definitely did not, but Beth is confused. Just then you hear Noah being beaten in the other room.
Later, Dawn comes to Beth’s room. She knows that Noah didn’t unplug the ventilator. She says she had to beat Noah to keep up appearances. She proceeds to tell Beth that Beth isn’t the greater good and hence isn’t keeping her worth. “The wards keep my officers happy. The happier my officers are are the harder they work to keep us going.” It’s basically a warning to fall in line or she’s done there.
Beth goes to see Noah, who says he’s fine (black eye, cut on his eye brow). He tells her that he knows that Trevitt was important to Dawn for some reason. Beth says she’ll leave with him. He tells Beth that he’ll distract Dawn while she makes a play for her spare elevator key.
When they get their chance, Beth goes through Dawn’s drawers. She finds a wallet and we see her looking at an ID with St. Ignatius Hospital on the back (we learn later that this belonged to Trevitt). Then she looks over and finds the body of Joan on the floor. It looks like she killed herself by opening up the sutures on her amputation and bleeding out.
Ignoring the body, she finds the spare key in a drawer just as Gorman walks in. He offers to keep quiet if Beth will “be friendly.” Beth looks over and sees Joan reanimating. She agrees to go along with Gorman to buy some time, then smashes a jar on his head, knocking him to the ground where he’s bitten in the jugular by Joan. Beth grabs his gun and runs
When she sees Dawn in the hallway, she says tells her that Joan was looking for her and that she saw her and Gorman heading toward her office. Noah and Beth make a break for the elevator shaft while screams echo from Dawn’s office.
Noah lowers Beth down the shaft on a makeshift rope. As he climbs down the rope after her, a walker reaches through some partially open elevator doors. He falls into the pile of bodies at the bottom of the shaft. Beth jumps down after him.
Noah’s leg is messed up, but he can limp. They fight their way out of the basement into the parking lot. Tons more walkers on the other side of the fence in a temporary medical area. They climb through and Beth fights walkers while Noah somehow outpaces her and squeezes through a gate on the other side. Beth, having been slowed down by walkers, is tackled by an officer. As she’s wrestled to the ground she sees Noah escaping and smiles.
Dawn dresses down Beth in her office, where, it’s worth noting, there’s a third body on the floor next to Gorman (who’s had his stomach partially eaten out). Beth pleads self defense. She accuses Dawn of letting these things happen. Dawn says she has to. “NO ONE’S COMIN’ DAWN. We’re all gonna die and you let this happen for NOTHIN’.” Dawn looks like she’s thinking about, then looks at the floor and sees a shattered picture of her and I’m assuming Hanson. Then she knocks Beth out.
Cut to Dr. Edwards examining Beth’s new forehead sutures. As he leaves the room Beth confronts him: “How’d you know Trevitt was a doctor? That’s why you had me give him the wrong meds, right? Why you had me kill him? ‘Cuz if he had lived there’d be another doctor and Dawn wouldn’t need you.” Edwards doesn’t fight the charge. He says they would have kicked him out or had him killed. He looks at the Caravaggio. “When they arrested Christ, Peter denied being one of his disciples. He didn’t have a choice, they would have crucified him too.”
He leaves the room. Beth picks up a pair of scissors and follows him. She stalks him down the hallway aaaaaand…
Carol is brought in on a stretcher. EPISODE ENDS!
UUUUUGH the cliffhangers! Where’s Daryl?! Is Noah going to come back and save them?! What the hell is wrong with Carol?! Is Dawn nuts or sane enough for a change of heart?!
And we need a name for these loony cops at the hospital. I’m thinking… The Grady Bunch. Who’s with me?!

Those crazy people brought CAROL in…. muahahahaaa!! Another group is about to find out that they’re screwing with the wrong people!!
Do you think Carol’s faking? Trojan horsing a can of whoop ass?
Carol will not go down easy!
I can’t help but think she & Daryl may have been attacked…that they’re grabbing people they think would be easy to control & they took Carol, thinking her to be the weaker one.
I went from twisted stomach to maniacal laughing at the end! This season is hitting… BAM! BAM! BAM!
They’re fucking with the wrong people!
Carol looked kind of beat up. It would be a pretty cool move to allow herself to get taken but it looked like she lost a fight. I have to go watch it again.
I think if there was a stealth plan to bust up these people’s system & retrieve Beth, Daryl would’ve went in with Carol & we would’ve seen a return of at least 4 people instead of Daryl looking kinda grim while he calls Noah out of the woods. Just my thoughts.
I can see a scenario where Daryl would let Carol go ahead and infiltrate while he went back for the others. But I don’t think that happened. Cops chased Noah, they all ran into Carol/Daryl… there was an altercation and Daryl/Noah retreated.
Only thing about that theory that wouldn’t make sense is that if the cops fought them then why would they bring Carol back into their base. Make more sense to kill her. Meh, we’ll see. Cool development though.
Carol probably has a stick of gum and a ball of lint in her pocket….which is enough to burn down the whole hospital once she awakens!!!
Agreed. Every since Carol Vs. Terminus I’m 100% sure she’s faking it to get in and save Beth. Maybe she and D saw Beth’s attempt to escape. Carol chose to “hide in plain site” while D took Noah back to get Rick and the crew. Possible.
It’s possible. I’m flippin’ back & forth between the two (damn, this show is good!).
Man beth is so awesome this episode, sucks what Noah did to her and just left but I think a surprise is in store.beth is kicking major butt!
I don’t know. I think Beth would have been disappointed if he had stayed after all the went through to get out. She looked pretty satisfied to see him make it out.
Honestly, what did you guys think of tonight’s episode?
I thought the first 30 minutes were rough. But, it turned out pretty good!!
Pure love. Glad to see a character that people have counted out get a chance to kick mother fucking ass.
I liked not knowing exactly what was going on & then having it fall into place as the ep built up to the end. I didn’t know whether or not we could trust Noah, but I liked him right off.
I instantly liked and trusted Noah. Didn’t like the doc though. I thought he was just gaining Beth’s trust to use her. I just didn’t think he was going to use her to kill!
Such a good fucking ep.
Beth has shown herself to be a survivor in this episode. She is able to outwit some of the tyrants in this episode, and, overall, seems like a breath of fresh air. She may be sweet, but she’s no sucker! 😉
What happened to Darrel he and Carol were together??
No Black Bad guys yet ?
Seriously ?
Dark meat is goooood!!!
All Black guys are good ,yet
all Bad Guys are White ?
( with a few Hispanics thrown in)
Andrew
Shumpert
Well according to horror movie rules, all black guys die first, along with any topless chicks. So maybe all the black bad guys went out first!
Loved the Bethisode! It is hard to have an episode that is completely separate from the other Survivors, but Beth carried it and it was fan-fucking-tastic.
–
What the FUCK is stuck up Dawn’s ass and can it be surgically removed? Paging Dr. Edwards!
–
Gorman…Fuck you SUCKER. No one pokes things in Beth’s mouth uninvited.
–
Love the satisfied smile on Beth’s face when Noah escapes!
–
Carol!!! Noooo! Get her the fuck out of there Bethy!!
I was wondering if their would be a bad episode this season, I guess we are gonna get filler for the next 2-3 episodes… Well in all honesty I think its the writing of Matthew Negrete that really drags this episode down so much… god that was horrible.
This episode had some *really* weird dialogue.
Maybe because most of the people in this episode were total twats?
Yeah, I guess. Everything seemed so vague and half-baked. Like every bit of dialogue was just some threatening subtext with no real substance.
Not a terrible episode. But not a favorite.
Well there will always be people who still think this show is all about the action and the zombies and if they don’t get enough then the episode sucks. Personally I thought this was a phenomenal episode because we see the continued evolution of a character who has gone from a naive girl to a bad ass fearless woman. Beth was the babysitter and she was ready to scissor someone’s neck! Her character evolution is fucking awesome!
Crazy shiznit doesn’t even touch the surface! Great job Beth! She’s Turning into a badass! Daryls talk must have sunken in. Screw Miss Little Sunshine Psychopath Dawn. Some one needs to give that woman some bi-polar meds! DAMN! I hope the “lollipop guild” finds Rick and CO. And they come in like the calvary and rescue our two new badass Chicas! The episode in the beginning I agree was a bit wonky maybe it was the choice of music lol
Can’t believe how much dislike I have already seen for this episode. I thought it was great! New characters, story line development, a break from the main story and nothing to do with the comics so it’s fresh. Some really intense moments too! I was on the edge of my seat a few times. Great episode IMO and I am really happy to see Beth back.
Prediction: Carol and Daryl chased down those in the car they were after who were out looking for Noah. They ran into Noah hiding before he was found and discovered the truth about who they were after and that they had Beth. Carol did whatever she had to to get them to take her in so she can get Beth out. Maybe even had Daryl rough her up a bit for the “greater good”. It had to be Carol because they seem to prefer women to “keep the officers happy”. Daryl takes Noah back with him and that’s who’s behind him in the bushes. Carol and Beth will pretend to meet each other for the first time as Beth helps nurse her back to health. Obviously Carol and Beth are going to F up their day in the end. Those “police” are going to get what they have coming.
I don’t think the car Daryl and Carol saw was out looking for Noah. Last week on TWD’s subreddit people had hypothesized that Rick and Co. were near the town of Commerce, GA, based off screenshots of Abraham’s map. That town is over an hour’s drive away from Atlanta and it isn’t likely that they’d go all the way out there looking for Noah, it’s probably just one of the cars that goes out to look for people.
I think that Daryl and Carol did run in to Noah though as they reached Atlanta. If that’s the case, then I think the rest of your prediction holds up pretty well. Unfortunately we’re going to have to wait at least two weeks to find out because they’ve decided to have an Abraham-centric episode next week.
Ahh, I missed that discussion and was too lazy to go back and look at the map. That makes perfect sense. By the time he gets that far out, there is no point. He could have gone 60 miles in any direction.
We’ve waited this long to find out what happened to Beth, I think it’ll be alright if I have to wait 2 weeks to find out what happens next. =) I’m actually rather excited to see what happens to Abraham and crew. Especially having Maggie and Glenn with them.
I didn’t expect it, but I am enjoying how the story is being told this season.
Thoughts are that Daryl and Carol were successful in following the Beth abduction vehicle. They did a little recon while laying low, after hearing shots fired and seeing Beth recaptured and Noah escaping. They probably captured Noah, (he wasn’t fleet of foot) hobbled, injured from the elevator shaft fall. They got info and set a plan in motion for Carol to infiltrate the building. Once inside and Daryl and Noah prepared to intervene, they took control then left. Just speculation that behind the bushes is Beth, Noah, the Doctor. Not sure Carol survived she may have sacrificed herself for the others to escape. Seems that from the previous episode she wanted to go her own way, and it would be fitting for her to go out with once again saving the friends that didn’t want her around.
Suuuuper down to meet a ton of new characters all at once like that, as a comic fan im happy to be really in the dark
I knew this episode was coming at some point. Similar to the Governor episodes where it gave backstory leading up to him reappearing with the group.
.
Looks like the answer to who is with Daryl is also answered. Noah escapes, and Carol is wheeled in. So likely Daryl and Carol confronted the vehicle with the Grady Bunch patrol (they go out looking for fresh meat so I will call then “Sam’s meat crew”) so likely Carol was picked up in said confrontation and Noah ends up with Daryl?
.
The event with Noah escaping and Carol being rolled into the hospital is the morning after the church beat down. So giving time for Daryl to run into and confront Noah and find out enough information from him that he can go back and get the gang together and prepare for a Very Brady Reunion… where Noah hopefully gets to give Dawn a little payback. (Noah with football) – Dawn: Oh, my nose!
Wow. You know I go back and look at season 2 and I would have bet that the character of Beth was zombie bait to be used as part of Maggie’s character development. No offense to the actress. It just seemed like they weren’t going to do much with her. But she’s really come a long way.
I love the comment on Talking Dead about Maggie though. I’m trying to remember. Has she even inquired about Beth? I’ll assume that her concern for her sister is happening off camera. Also, I have to rewatch it but did Noah say something about a walled community in Richmond? Hmmm, would be funny if Alexandria wasn’t in Alexandria. Maybe I heard wrong.
Awesome Beth episode!! She is really starting to be smart. The last episodes she was in, she was acting like a spoiled teenager.
Two ways Carol shows up: One is that she and Daryl were in a wreck in the car and they only found Carol. Two, Carol and Daryl show up the same moment that Beth and Noah are escaping. Carol is playing injured to gain access to the hospital.
Daryl with eventually show up at Gabriels church with Carol, Beth, and Noah and perhaps Morgan.
I realize that Daryl has never met Morgan, but Daryl isn’t the kind that shoots to kill first and asks questions later.
I totally have not seen the spoiled teenager vibe from Beth since the farm. I’m always surprised when people feel this way.
What about the drinking country club episode when Beth got kidnapped? Definetly spoiled teenager mentality there.
I didn’t see that as spoiled in the least. She had just seen her father decapitated and was separated from almost everyone she knew and loved. I think her desire for a drink was a mixture of coping what that loss and seizing the day. Seeing all she had just seen, I imagine it was an even bigger reminder that we aren’t guaranteed a tomorrow–so live today. Yeah, not spoiled. Not spoiled at all. I guess she could have just pouted and bottled her emotions and stared at a campfire like some other people did though.
Freaking thank you. YES. And what really pisses me off is when Daryl was throwing her around for a bit like a ragdoll (borderline abusive) and all fans of “everyone’s favorite redneck” came down to try and justify his behavior all by smearing Beth as “spoiled” or a “bitch.” Yeah… No. Nada. Nah, son. Beth just lost father, was separated from her group, stuck with someone she barely interacts with, and just wants to feel alive in the midst of what has been the shittiest day of her life for one moment. Her father drank to cope and I’m sure she heard of many others drinking to cope with life. She was just curious. “Seizing the day,” like you said. It was a chance at an experience. Doesn’t make her a spoiled teenager.
Carol and Beth in the hospital together…
They’re fucking with the wrong WOMEN!
Sorry to geek it up about details, but 75 mg of clozapine won’t kill an adult. They had so much potential to make a real “pretend” error.
1 g of clozapine and then he pretend it a 1 mg of Klonopin.
2 mg of clonidine and then he pretended it a 2 mg of Klonopin
Not that it mattered… did you see how she ground the stuff up? Not like she came close to doing it justice. Still huge clumps of clozapine.
Agree, the mixture she made was not homogenous, and therefore not accurate. Clozapine tablets are not to be injected anyway. I was thinking that USP standards of preparing injections are not existent in the Post-Apocalyptic Grady Hospital.
I personally think that this Dr. Steven Edwards will end up going with the characters to Alexandria and will serve as the equivalent of the esteemed Dr. Cloyd for the TV show.
Seriously…what is it about post apocalyptic men and their urge to rape a Greene girl?
***Hey Brian, can we make the number of replies to a person’s post unlimited? After the thread goes down a couple of replies then you can’t reply anymore and I have much more to say about why Beth is NOT a spoiled brat.***
Brilliant idea. ^^
Yep, ’cause I was dying to tell you up there that I thought you considered the Daryl/Beth ep as “filler”. Correct me if I’m wrong (?)
Did I say that at some point? I may have been being overly critical. My only main gripe wih season 4B is how long it took everyone to get back together. Felt like it was dragging for time kind of regularly. Anything to keep the cast broken up a little longer.
Plus I can’t despise an episode that inadvertently introduced me to my current favorite band. The song that played at the end of the episode when they burned the cabin was “Up The Wolves” by The Mountain Goats and I cannot. stop. listening. to. them. So I owe the episode a thanks.
That may be a small part of why I love the shit out of “Still.” The Mountain Goats have been one of my go-to jams forever so when I heard that in the episode I literally jumped out of my chair! Ha ha.
Whoever picks the music for TWD, we may be soul sisters/brothers. It’s all either already in my rotation or I am immediately downloading it because it totally speaks to me.
–
My discovery from the show was Sharon Van Etten. I heard her song last season and was like WOW. Jam her all the time now.
Everytime someone talks about “filler” episodes of TWD I just stare at them, mouth agape and wonder if we are watching the same show.
One of the best parts of this episode was when Beth smashed that pig in the head with the glass jar and fed him to the walker on the floor – She is becoming more awesome every time they focus on her. She was about to go on a killing spree before she saw Carol come in.
My opinion – Carol and Daryl run into Noah – who tells them Beth is alive in the hospital – and that there is no good way in. He tips them off – so Carol plays possum to get in (never believe Daryl is controllable) – and will play along until Daryl gets Rick and the others to go back and get the both of them. That’s why Daryl has Noah with him when he comes back to the church.
Slow start to the episode, but it picked up great – and the end was perfect – Carol doesn’t play around – so whatever the case, they will hate it when she wakes up…
I am a big fan of The Walking Dead TV show, but I must admit that I do not read the comics. However, I’ve read a lot of people talking about Alexandria as a safe haven “with walls”. Is this what Noah was speaking of? Alexandria, VA is not far from Richmond, VA. It’s also on the way to Washington DC. I think Noah will come back with Daryl and save Beth. I’m very worried about Carol though.
While I was watching the “Bethisode” I realised there were some similarities between the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp and the Hospital that Beth is in. They both make it seem like as you work you are slowly getting released, both of them are lying, they dispose of the dead in literal pits of bodies, they force their kidnappees (Is that a word?) to wear bland, simple uniforms and last but not least, they both have a history of sexual assault on there captives.
Good observation!
Thanks Carly!
I think maybe Noah has ran into Daryl and Carol and told them everything, including the cops only take weak ones, Carol has managed to rough herself up and she’s going to try and save Beth and It will be Noah that Daryl has got in the woods
I keep seeing this “playing possum” theory and am just not buying it. Carol and Daryl both are too smart then to pretend a lame duck scenario to infiltrate the hospital.
.
They would have immediately returned to Rick and the group upon finding Beth’s catures then hatch such a lame rescue effort as that.
Haven’t seen anyone else mention it (though I might have skipped some posts?) but is it me or did the entire episode feel like a single day event? Which I can’t imagine to be possible but there was no identification of multiple days in this episode. Dawn mentions the night she arrived when talking to her about her wrist scars but little more. So was she unconscious for the entire time she was kidnapped from Daryl’s side???
.
Every scene appears to have light shining through windows or transitions into a same timeline scene that does. Only scene that almost eludes to another day is when she gets knocked out at the end and Doc mentions she is healing quickly. But even it makes her wounds appear rather fresh. (and previous cheek wound looked no better) So possibility of the escape attempt and Carol being rolled in to be a separate day but not enough other evidence to indicate multiple days.
Sure seems like she had a quick attraction to Noah and one armed Cindy (Grady Reference) in a very short period.
Kind of hope they work on their time line thing a bit? And where is the weather? Does it not rain?Storm? We know rain caused the ceiling to collapse at the food shelter and flood the basement… but I really don’t recall any bad weather in the show?
Why can’t we edit our posts? I always see formatting and typos AFTER I press enter. ha
I loved how original this storyline was. Our meek, blonde, female character whom we haven’t seen since the end of last season finally shows up after a few episodes. She has a new, tough black friend, and is integrated into an idyllic community, which is too good to be true. The community is run by a leader who thinks of themself as a hero, when in fact, they’ve become twisted and cruel due to the apocalypse. Their retinue includes a meek but clever man of science, whose way of survivng is making themself of as good a use to the leader as possible, and a less intelligent brute of a man, who doesn’t always stick within the parameters the leader gives him. Haven’t seen that before. At least not since Woodbury.
I don´t like this episode , with Hospital things and that. Ugh, suck
i dont like this episode, why you even make episodes like this? Only one main character appears in this episode who’s not even popular… really??
When will the winner be announced?
