Hey all, we’re back again! Disclaimer: this is kind of a fast and loose recap, so we can get to the discussion. It’s not 100% accurate to episode chronology. I’m trying to make these easier to read as a summary, and not just a play-by-play.
When last we saw our crew, we saw Patrick re-animating inside the prison, which is definitely NOT GOOD. This week begins with a whole other internal threat. Someone is drawing the walkers to the fences with tasty rat treats. Seems like a pretty horrible idea, no matter who you are.
We see more of the budding romance between Karen and Tyreese before all out havoc breaks loose in the prison. Patrick follows Karen out of the showers into one of the cell blocks. Before they’re able to contain the outbreak, a handful of people have died. A father of two from Woodbury is bitten and beyond help. He asks Carol to look after his daughters. He says goodbye and then Carol has to stab his brain. Before she can his daughter volunteers to do it. When she can’t, Carol carries out the stabbing.
Caleb takes a look at the dead walkers and they determine that they were killed by illness–pressure builds up in the lungs and sinuses and causes bleeding from eyes/nose/throat. Rick says he saw it on a walker before at the fences and Daryl noticed it on Patrick (so kudos to those of you that picked up on that). Caleb says it could be pneumococcal infection (bacterial) or an aggressive flu (viral). Rick mentions the pig that died and also the sick boar in the woods. Everyone that was in, or entered the cell block, need to be separated.
Earlier in the day Rick and Carl did some more chores around the prison farm. Carl argues to help clear the fences but Rick is set against it. He also wants his gun back. Also a no go. This is when Rick and Carl hear shots inside the prison (as does Michonne, who comes back from outside the gates). Rick goes inside while Carl and Maggie help Michonne get past the walkers at the gate (Carl doing some nice shooting).
The council convenes and discusses what needs to be done. They agree that the exposed persons need to be put in a different cell block. As they’re saying this Karen walks by coughing. They tell her and Tyreese that she’ll need to be quarantined.
Beth wraps Michonne’s ankle and they talk about taking risks for the people you care about. Michonne seems surprised and a little touched by the idea that these people care about her now. While Michonne works out, Beth sings to Judith, who responds by puking on Beth. Michonne tries to refuse holding Judith, but ultimately has to. As she looks at Judith she starts to cry and then holds her tight.
Carol talks to Carl about the knife-lesson. He says he hasn’t told his dad but doesn’t want to lie to him. Carol says that the council may not understand what she’s doing. She straight-up asks Carol not to say anything.
Outside, Daryl is burying the dead. When Rick joins him he tries to convince Rick to take charge he again, “Like I said, you earned [a break], but for what it’s worth, you see mistakes, I see when the shit hits, you’re standing there with the shovel.” Before they can talk about it more Maggie calls for help. The walkers are piling up against the fence and it’s collapsing.
To draw the walkers off, Rick takes the remaining pigs, hops in the back of a truck, trucks their legs so they can’t run, and feeds them to the walkers, luring the walkers off the fence. With the fences now walker-free, the people still inside are able to re-enforce them.
The two now-fatherless girls that Carol is looking after are at the gates, looking at the walkers. She tells them that the walkers that they’ve been naming are dead.
As Rick dismantles the pig pen, Carl comes out. Carl asks if the pigs are making the people sick and Rick says maybe, or maybe it’s the people making the pigs sick, either way, they need to stay away from Judith for a while. Carl then tells Rick that Carol has been teaching the kids about weapons. He says Rick should let her. Rick says he won’t stop her and he won’t say anything, then he lights the pig pen on fire. He gives Carl his gun back and straps on his hand-cannon.
In the last scene, Tyreese goes to visit Karen, only to find a path of blood leading from her cell out to the yard, where he finds two burned and smoking corpses.
WHAAAAT?! Who’s killing the sick?!
Who’s feeding the walkers at the fence? Is it the girls or…
Who’s going to come down with swine flu?
What’s going on with Carol?
What’s up with Michonne and Judith?
How will Tyreese react to his new love being killed?
We want to hear from you! Let us know what you think! Best answer will get a shirt of their choosing!
Last week’s best answer was from Andrew, who’s comment is too long to post, but it was well thought-out, had some good theories, and best of all, he reads (and mentions) the comics!
The winner below: Frank Visone! We loved his look into Michonne’s psyche because we love Michonne!
this show stresses me out
I believe the one who killed the sick is (can’t remember his name) the african american fella haha that made the liquor section fall in the supermarket (also believe he is feeding the walkers). He seems odd, and was in the cell when they discussed the Flu. Also I think Michonne had children (or a child) and lost him/her before or during the infection, that’s why she acts that way. Carol is becoming more cold in this world just like some of the others to survive, but she still has a caring heart so shes conflicted with some things. Tyreese will want revenge but I think Rick will ultimately be back in the leadership role, and deal with it.
Bob Stokley, a recovering drunk and former army medic. In the comics he was the one that “stitched” the governor back up after Michonne tortured him. I think that it is either him or the governor feeding the walkers at the gate.
I am an 18 year old young man who rarely ever cries and never cry over a tv show or movie. I cried tonight after seeing this episode…
Tyrees is going to snap
I think that is going to be in the next 2 episodes. When in the trailer for season 4 they show him get surrounded by walkers and he goes all out on them. Hommage to the comic when they are clearing out the gym in the prison and he gets swarmed but comes out ok.
might take some heat for this but the 1 feeding the walkers and maybe burned the people. im willing to bet its 2 different people and 1 of them is carl. he disagrees with some of his dads choices but it would set up good for a whole psycho carl if it was him. As interesting as that would be though im hoping to see the governor soon.
The fence had zombie kill of the week
i think the kids who named zombies are feeding them. i think carol or rick burned the sick. like to see michonne flash back before out break. i do think tyreese will lash out. this series is amazing, glued whole way thru. rooting for more of relationship between darol and daryl.
Looks like Rick is going back to butt kicking Rick
I think bob was the one to burn the bodies
Just like in the comic…it is really sad when Rick realizes no matter how hard he tries to recapture “normal” for himself, and more importantly to him, Carl…this new world will not allow the old one back. This show did an amazing job of relating that same sadness and desperation. It was a great episode. As hard as he wants this for his boy, the depressing fact is that Carl won’t have that life he wanted for him. Time to give back the gun.
I really thought when I saw the blood trail and the bodies burned that Karen had set the other guy and herself on fire; monk style.
It really looks like it is the girls feeding the rats, but I’m not sure they could kill the rats. But the younger one said the older one is messed up, and that is definitely messed up. This world would definitely mess with some kids heads; bad.
I’m really worried Tyreese could be sick from Karen, his daughter Julie looked sick in the preview, Darryl from licking his fingers, Rick from all the pig blood, and Maggie because that picture that Glen took of her. It would be SO sad to lose Maggie. Not sure how to handle that.
Carol is either turning into the female Rick, or going cuckoo like the comic! Could go either way. I dig it.
Michonne must have lost a child…she is such a great actress. It is ridiculous.
Tyreese was like Rick, wanting to get his old life back. To stop having to deal with the death around him. If he survives this epidemic…then I expect a much angrier Tyreese. Especially if his daughter dies…that definitely is a turning point for T-time in the comic.
I also thought it was interesting when Carl asked if Patrick (Potter-walker) was Catholic. Carol said he was Atheist. I love where they could be going with all this…I’ll just stop there. 🙂
No matter what Rick will do he will always have to go back to a leader position. Everyone is just giving him the time away to try and heal himself. He made a lot of choices for the group and some didn’t work out but he always had the groups well being at heart. The man has lost his wife had to kill his best friend and was losing his son. Him giving Carl his gun back and putting his back on his hip shows that his vacation is over. The good thing now is he will have people who have stepped up to help him and he is not alone. I think it’s good to have sherif Rick back
I think it’s the kids who are feeding the rats to the walkers. When Carol was pleading with Carl not to say anything to Rick, it sounded like the parents would not approve of Carol teaching the kids how to use knives. This shows that the kids do not have a healthy fear of the walkers that is needed to survive. Remember the kids naming the walkers in the first episode? That also shows a naivety on the part of the kids. After all, they did come from Woodbury where they were relatively shielded from the walkers. Their only real interaction came from the gladiatorial type games the Governor held.
The pig scene was rough-not because the pigs were dying, but because of what the pigs stand for. Rick was destroying/sacrificing his farming in order to protect the group. When Rick is tearing apart his gardening fence, it also shows his leaving of the Farmer Rick persona. It is a moment of realization of what must be done both on his part and his sons part when Carl wholeheartedly agrees that they have to keep the baby safe. Rick joins forces with his son by giving him his gun back and returning his own to his belt.
Who I think is killing the sick is Bob. I remember in the season 4 comic-con trailer it shows him looking in the mirror with his hand all bloody. Maybe he felt guilty after and couldn’t handle it anymore. It did show him one scene listening to the others when they were in the cell talking about the flu. He could be just looking out for the team.
I don’t think its both the girls but I think it is Lizzie. The older one (if that is her name). She had an argument with Carl saying how they’re not different. She probably still thinks that so she feeds them. Also her little sister even says she’s messed up. The younger one was probably forced not to tell anyone.
There’s a chance that Tyreese could go down with the swine flu. He was right beside Karen as she was coughing, and who knows maybe they kissed before that we don’t know of.
I think Carol is just watching out for the group. She doesn’t want any kid to go through what Sophia had to. I believe she’s nothing like she was in the comics and I hope it stays that way. Carol is becoming too cautious though because she gave her knife to Lizzie which could go through many bad things for a girl that’s messed up. Carol might think she’s doing the right thing but something bad might happen.
Michonne probably had a bad experience with a baby before. I think she had a baby with her boyfriend before the apocalypse and somehow the baby died and Michonne blames herself. Maybe the baby got sick from that same disease they were talking about in the cell because that one guy did mention that the illness was still going around before the apocalypse. Also when Judith was crying it looked like Michonne couldn’t handle it. The way Michonne was also holding Judith looked like Michonne was holding it like the baby was her own.
I think Tyreese is going to blame Daryl for being in that discussion of separating the ill people and then Rick will try to interfere and then a huge fight will happen. It does show in the trailer that they fight. It’s not Tyreese’ fault, he lost his only love in the apocalypse and there aren’t that many people to choose from. Who knows maybe it was Tyreese’ second time losing someone he truly loves.
