Could Abraham return to The Walking Dead? That’s what some fans assumed after watching Michael Cudlitz’s appearance on Good Morning America’s Strahan and Sara. When asked if he thought his character could come back, Cudlitz responded, “I don’t know. The show has sort of laid out in its history the way they tell stories is through flashbacks and origin stories, so there are still characters on the show that were very close to Abraham that he had history with. So, (they) could very easily go back…they’re also doing other movies that go back in time, go forward in time, and I believe pair up characters that weren’t necessarily paired up in the graphic novels.”
When Sara jokingly pressed him on if that meant he WAS returning, Cudlitz said, “It’s a strong, subtle yes…very, very possible (laughs).” Obviously, Abraham died years ago when Negan bashed his head in with Lucille – so any return would be in the form of a flashback, origin story, or Marvel “What If” series (we seriously doubt that last one). But if he DID return, it could easily fit into the 10-year Walking Dead Universe plan, which will reportedly include movies, spin-offs, and more.
So far, AMC has announced three TV movies centered around Rick Grimes along with a second unnamed spin-off TV show. Could that spin-off show be an Abraham origin story? It depends – we HAVE already seen much of his backstory back in Season 4 (shown in the crappy video below). So any sort of origin story would either take place before his family was devoured or during the journey with Eugene and Rosita after. Either way, it seems like a long shot.
It’s possible Michael Cudlitz was just making a joke and this isn’t happening at all. But whatever the case may be, it’s always fun to speculate. And while we question what’s real and what’s fake, check Cudlitz out on ABC’s The Kids Are All Right Tuesdays at 8:30PM – it’s hilarious!
