It’s not often a character in The Walking Dead gets to prepare for their own death. But Carl was different. After realizing he was bit, Carl spent his final days hanging out with Judith and writing letters to his loved ones. Eventually, we learned what he wrote to Rick, Michonne, and even Negan. But fans have been clamoring to find out what Carl wrote to his boo Enid. Seven and-a-half years later (on the show), we finally got our answer.
In Season 9 Episode 11 Enid was tasked with convincing Lydia to return to her mother in exchange for Alden (her boyfriend) and Luke. Speaking to Henry, Enid said, “Someone else close to me died, someone special, with a big heart,” she said, referring to Carl. “He left me a letter reminding me that ‘just surviving,’ it isn’t living. It took me way too long to get what he really meant.”
This is clearly a reference to Enid’s old motto of “Just Survive Somehow (or JSS).” It’s the creed she stuck to after being forced to live on her own in between her parents’ deaths and arrival in Alexandria. But as we’ve learned in the show, just surviving isn’t enough…you have to find something else to live for. And now, Enid’s living to see Alden again. Thankfully, Lydia gave herself up and Enid and Alden were reunited again. It’s a relief to know that Carl’s presence is still felt so many years later.
The Walking Dead airs on AMC Sundays at 9PM.
