In a dreary world of death and seemingly endless walkers, there MIGHT be some hope. “The Walking Dead” writer/creator Robert Kirkman recently sat down with comedian Marc Maron on the WTF Podcast to discuss the possible ending for TWD.
“People talk about how ‘The Walking Dead’ is bleak, and if you take a certain cross-section of the story, then yeah. Horrible,” Kirkman said. “People have their loved ones eaten and they have a horrible time. But I see the story from beginning to end, over many many years about humanity overcoming this insurmountable apocalyptic situation.”
Part of his inspiration derives from the frustration of zombie movies like “Night of the Living Dead” where humans don’t ever get a happy ending. Kirkman pondered, “How do you continue to find food and shelter and protect loved ones for years and years and deal with the fall of civilization?”
He went on to say, “I hope ‘The Walking Dead’ goes on long enough that at the end, everyone is like, ‘Good thing we took care of those zombies!’”
SO TWD fans, what do YOU think of this possible scenario? Do you really think the world could eventually be walker-free or is it simply wishful thinking? Let us know in the comments below!

..but wouldn’t that also mean finding a cure for whatever makes everyone turn after they die? That sounds like it’s a looooong ways off.
I don’t think that there will ever be real happy ending with TWD. There are too many undead on the planet for humans to exterminate completely. Even if there are still a billion people (there definitely aren’t) left on the planet there are 4-5 billion walkers. Unless we get to a point where the tissue and muscles on walkers eventually give away and they die out on their own, but that is the only way I can see it ending.
Well theoretically in your scenario, if there is lets say 6 billion walkers and there is lets say just 200 million people, if every person kills 30 walkers within their life (which is certainly possible given how many Rick and the gang killed alone). Then all you gotta worry about is dead people turning which is manageable. Also like you said eventually all will eventually decompose anyway.
Ohhhh…. THAT kind of ending! WHEW!!!
As long as Rick’s not dreaming, we’re good.
i thought about that. the wife said i was crazy. what if he did wake up with that knowledge of what to come after already dreaming it. it changed the scenarios and maybe then he decides to take carl and lori to the sea and find a key off florida to live out the rest of their “real” lives walker free. maybe taking carol, glenn, maggie, hershel, beth, sopia, andrea, the old man (not shane..he has to die…cant have that shit). and anyone else that he decides is worthy. never crossing paths with alexandrians, the saints, the atlanta people, the hilltop (- gregory) and they could have left the farm and found a boat to find an island.BOOM
Hmm… interesting… I never thought about it as a premonition. I was just thinking the sheriff would wake up & simply have a new take on life.
Something new like Vamps (highly doubt because of “Empire of the Dead”) Aliens or some kind of a new threat.
Now that the Zombies are “taken care of”
How can it be walker-free when everyone is infected? The walkers will have to die off or fall apart, but for there to be any humans being the victor, there has to be some kind of cure or some kind of vaccine to prevent total extermination of the human race. I, also hope that the strong do prevail, but at this point in time, it seems hopeless.
They would just eventually decompose, and then you would just make sure to put one through the eyes whenever someone dies.
Im guessing itll be a “oh they rotted away so now cremations for all!” type thing, i dont see a cure happening
Cremation, after the ritual metal spike through the eye of course… Would that count as the walkers being “taken care of”? The idea doesn’t have the comforting feel that phrase gives you.
Weird to think of a time in the TWD world where there are no walkers again. Some of the season 6 guys and girls do seem to be getting there mind you. How long will it be before, 28 Weeks Later like, they are all starved and rotted past the point of being a danger?
Really hope it doesn’t turn into a Roseann type situation where it was all a fragment of Rick or another character’s imagination. Don’t see it ending anytime soon!
It seems perfectly reasonable to me that there could be an end to TWD. There looks to be a well established sustainable community developing. As the hordes are thinned out, it could become reasonable to make sure that when everyone dies they are appropriately disposed of without the potential for returning.
At the very least, I think the humans will outlive the decay rate of the walkers. Happy ending is when they rot to nothing and are no longer a threat and humanity can slowly rebuild without their threat.
