In its final episode this week, Invincible’s second season proved to be even more epic than its first! As part of our continuing series of behind-the-scenes video interviews, Skybound Insiders (Skybound’s free-to-join rewards program) sat down for an exclusive chat with two of the folks responsible for all the feels, fun, and fury of Season 2 – Supervising Producer and Director Dan Duncan and Supervising Producer and Art Director Shaun O’Neil. Here are the highlights of their conversation…
Introducing the Multiverse
“Angstrom is the anchor,” says O’Neil at the 0:12 mark below, as the two discuss how Season 2’s Big Bad allows the show to travel into different dimensions, including those in which Mark has journeyed to the dark side.
The Fate of Mark and Amber
The trials and tribulations of Mark and Amber’s relationship are examined at the 2:21 mark. It’s a healthy one, says the pair, that unfortunately ends when two fully realized characters realize they’re on different life paths.
Angstrom’s Origin
“It’s a combination of mental trauma, physical trauma… You’re in a spot where you’re whole world is changing,” says O’Neil, at the 4:30 mark, of the psychological and body horror that defines Angstrom Levy. “It’s a very colorful show,” adds Duncan. “[But] the writers work in shades of gray.”
The Gift of Gore
While Invincible is famous in part for its no-holds-barred violence, Duncan and O’Neil discuss how they avoid desensitizing viewers with too frequent gore at the 6:48 mark. “Just make sure everything you do is done with intent,” says Duncan of their philosophy.
Debbie’s the Best
“Debbie is the lynchpin that changes everything,” says Duncan at the 8:29 mark, of the duo’s favorite character. “She’s in harm’s way and won’t lie down,” says O’Neil. “That’s dope.”
