As Executive Assistant to Skybound’s CEO David Alpert, Langston Williams is the connective tissue among the company’s many departments. The man who maintains Skybound’s steady heartbeat. To kick off our series of interviews celebrating Black History Month 2024, we chatted with Langston about his cinematic background, his love of Renfield and Invincible, and what fuels his endless enthusiasm for his work. Here’s what he had to say…
What’s your origin story?
I’m originally from Gulfport, Mississippi, a beach town on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. I spent my formative years in Louisiana. Film wasn’t always my first choice. My entire life I wanted to be an architect, but through life’s curve balls I found myself in film school at the University of New Orleans due to my love of cinema. Upon finishing film school, I worked in production for 7 years as an assistant to actors and directors.
How did you come to work at Skybound?
When Renfield came to New Orleans, I worked as an assistant to Bryan and Sean Furst. Following the strike, I thought I needed a change of pace. I reached out to [David Alpert] to ask about opportunities at Skybound. At the time I didn’t realize DA was the CEO of the company. He did let me know that there was an opening on his desk coming soon.
Can you describe your role as Executive Assistant to Skybound’s CEO, David Alpert?
I mainly operate as a chief of staff of sorts in that I act as a liaison between many of the departments and do a bit of scheduling.
What do you like best about working at Skybound?
I am learning a lot about how the business works from a different perspective. I think the many branches of Skybound into different avenues of entertainment puts me in a unique position to where I can grow no matter what my interests are.
What Skybound project are you proudest of?
I think Invincible is the project I’m most proud of mainly because I’m a huge fan! Before ever working at Skybound, I followed Invincible and thought it was arguably one of the best comic book shows available anywhere. Gives me lots of bragging rights!
Do you have any favorite Skybound titles?
In addition to Invincible, Renfield holds a place near and dear to my heart! Especially having worked on it and loving Ryan Ridley who wrote it!
What else do you nerd out over?
I nerd out over movies, video games, and boxing!
At any given time, I’ve probably seen every movie that is in theaters. I watch everything and all genres and just love cinema overall. I’m terrible at watching things at home though. I don’t watch much television, and usually, if I miss something in theaters, I never watch it at all. I think going to a movie theater is a magical and sacred experience though!
I’m an avid gamer (Team Xbox), and I’m always looking for a good RPG or first or third person shooter to delve into. The greatest game franchise ever made of course is Mass Effect (with Assassins Creed being a close second).
Although I don’t lace up the gloves myself, the only sport I follow pretty closely is boxing. If you ever want to have debates over who the current pound-for-pound champs are or in general want to chat anything boxing, I’m your guy! Oddly I’m not a big fan of MMA. It’s a little too hardcore for my tastes.
Do you have any advice for someone considering a career in your field?
Meet everyone you can. Assume anyone you meet on the journey will and can be helpful later in life so treat everyone accordingly. You are only as strong as your network.
