Hello Skybound Insiders! Today’s a good day, because we have a treat for you. Ultramega #1 is currently available to read for free via our free-to-join rewards program Skybound Insiders. Yes, you read that correctly — completely free! If you’ve ever been curious about about James Harren and Dave Stewart’s action and horror epic (the fifth issue of which will soon arrive), now is the perfect time to check it out! Do you need convincing? Here are 5 reasons you’ll love Ultramega #1.
1 – When Sentai Meets Horror
The best way to describe Ultramega is Sentai meets horror. It has giant monster fights, but with a twist. The monsters are brutal, and so are the battles. The world has been infected with a plague which is turning everyday people into Kaijus. Earth’s only line of defense is the Ultramega, a group of super powered individuals who can turn into giant warriors.
Sounds fun, right? It isn’t for the Ultramega. Their transformations are painful, and their mission has left them traumatized.
2 – The Bloodiest Kaiju Fights You’ll Ever See
If you love Kaiju fights, then you’re in for a treat. Ultramega takes Kaiju fighting to a whole new level. This isn’t the rubber suit fights in Power Rangers or early Godzilla movies…things get violent! For example, an Ultramega named Jason is decapitated during battle, and the blood gushing from his neck drowns many of the nearby citizens. One Kaiju even gets his arm devoured by another Kaiju. Ultramega brings a level of intensity to Kaiju battles you never knew you wanted!
3 – The Talented Creative Team
Ultramega #1 is written and penciled by James Harren and colored by Dave Stewart. Harden’s script is captivating, and will keep you on the edge of your seat from the first page to the last. I won’t give it away, but there is a big twist at the end of issue 1 that sends the series into an unexpected direction.
Harren and Stewart’s artwork is cinematic. Their Kaiju battle sequences are worth the price of admission. Plus, they give us some great body horror during the transformation sequences. Harren and Stewart lean into horror, giving us plenty of memorable images.
4 – Complex Characters
Ultramega is more than giant monsters smashing into one another. The book features fascinating and complex characters and deep themes. The first issue introduces us to Jason, who is horrified to learn that his wife and unborn child are infected with the virus. Jason is afraid that his presence will trigger their transformation, so he abandons his family, hoping the problem will take care of itself.
Of course, problems don’t work that way, and Jason’s mistakes come back to haunt him. Ultramega #1 gives us a brutal look at Jason’s guilt, and how that has weighed on his psyche. Plus, things get even more intense when he does reunite with his forgotten child. Trust me…that’s one confrontation you won’t want to miss.
(Like I said, this goes a lot deeper than typical Sentai and Kaiju stories!)
