Here is a new segment to our site, where we unveil upcoming covers to your favorite Skybound titles! As a treat- we’re even including some behind-the-scenes looks at the process behind making these masterpieces.
This week, I’ve been lucky enough to kick off with the cover for Thief of Thieves #7, with art by the impeccable Shawn Martinbrough and Felix Serrano. Shawn’s provided a few words about the cover you see here, so hit the jump for more info as well as some early sketches of the cover.
“For an artist, designing a cover can be simple. However, when you’re crafting the cover art to the final part of a story arc, the challenge is:
How do you create an image that sums up the finale but doesn’t give away any spoilers?
There ended up being two versions of this cover. The only difference between my preferred version of the cover and Kirkman’s preference was simply Redmond’s facial expression. Again, the artistic and commercial hurdle is not to give away the ending and stay true to the motivations of the character depicted. I think we went with the correct version but maybe for the collection we’ll include both and see what the fans think!”
Thief of Thieves #4 is in-stores this week, so hurry up and snag a copy before they’re all gone!
Check back next week as Super Dinosaur artist Jason Howard gives a little how-to on producing a cover for the best all-ages book out there.
