In Issue 184 Rick and Pamela returned to Commonwealth just in time to see everything (nearly) go to sh*t. Michonne plotted her next moves, Rick and Dwight had their own complications, and Mercer and Princess got to know each other better. So what did YOU think of the issue? Tell us in the comments! We’ll pick our favorite and send the winner a Robert Kirkman-signed copy!
Previously: Michonne and Elodie visit the lakeside town of Greenville, escorted by a Commonwealth guard, Jerome. Life is peaceful in Greenville, yet Michonne can’t ignore the separation between the haves and havenots. They return to the Commonwealth just as a man—Anthony Keith—is being beaten in the street by a group of guards, including Jerome. In her new position, Michonne is asked to defend the guards in court. But when Anthony Keith dies from his injuries, a riot breaks out, just as Rick and Governor Milton arrive…
This could have been the worst issue in the history of comics and it would not have mattered because of the train on the cover. I like trains.
Looking forward to picking this issue up today!!
Dwight’s pissing me off lately. I’m starting to see why Negan felt he needed to give him such a hard time. He’s right in his assessment in many ways but some kind of military coup is the exact wrong way and, besides, Pamela conceded this issue that she was elected. I don’t know how and when re-elections happen (or if they do) but she’s hardly endearing herself to the masses.
Sebastian is hilariously awful and Pamela’s reaction to Rick helping out was hilarious. Still though, being seen doing frontline stuff is Politics 101 – I don’t know what Pamela was before but surely she’s had to do stuff like this in her career?
I love Michonne’s fear that she might already have sold her soul. Her courtroom speech was okay but was a massive chunk of text for one panel, even a big one.
Didn’t realise the Princess had made the journey back but I am both shocked and delighted by her and Mercer. Still, I’m shipping Mercer/Michonne and Princess/Negan. Of course, Kirkman probably figures that these pairings are too obvious to oblige us with. Anyway, both Mercer and the Princess are fun characters.
Eugene got the cover and the incredibly rare namecheck in the title (apart from Michonne last issue, has this ever happened before?). Apart from that though, I was a bit disappointed. I love seeing him and Stephanie together and I guess there really wasn’t much more to say than we figured would be said when the cover was revealed 3 months ago.
Decent issue. 5 weeks til the next one though… gonna be a long old wait.
I realized that I didn’t get the train cover – I got the Princess cover by Bill Sienkiewicz. I love them both! I’m going to have to buy an extra copy of this issue.
Even after a few issues in this arc, it is still so striking how much the Commenwealth is different from Rick’s world. Michonne is dressed up giving a speech in a court of law that would not look out of place in a pre-apocalypse story. People are eating at a restaurant while Dwight cleans up refuse on the street from the riot. It is a great dichotomy.
I’d love to read a one-shot about Princess’ time in Pittsburgh. It would be great to see how she became the way she is; her interactions with anyone she met and how she got to meeting Rick and his group.
Princess finding some happiness in the Commonwealth.
I want Pamela’s kid to suffer for him being such a little prick.
Dwight is becoming quite dangerous. He’s a busybody. He seems to NEED to prove himself. He honestly makes me think of… a broken Rick. A Rick that did give up. And now what’s oppressed this “broken Rick” has been removed, he feels the need to do something. Build something. Save someone. Desperately. I see his point but this community is huge. and it’s mostly a good place. There’s too much to be gained from a relationship with these people to throw it away by trying to topple it for control. But Dwight sees himself as, well, a SAVIOR.
To me it seems like the next villain, not including civil issues between the communities, in the series is going to come when Eugene fixes the train and starts going through many many new areas of the US. The new villains will hear the train and follow it back to the Commonwealth or Alexandria. But overall I honestly feel like Eugene will be the next to die. He has become to important for the story. Seriously I wouldn’t be surprised if he started making gasoline somehow to get cars running again.
I thought Dwight would have felt differently and that the community would have reminded him of Negan’s rule. So I was surprised he wanted to stay and try to fix things. I wonder why Rick doesn’t want him to. Governor Milton wouldn’t approve that’s for sure.
Princess and Mercer!! I wasn’t expecting that! I was expecting Michonne and Mercer so I love a twist!
Love Eugene! And I feel like he needs to start teaching the younger generation the things he knows so someone can carry on for him one day.
Michonne is remarkable and she’s a chick with layers! (Like Al says) she surprises me. Her speech in the courtroom was amazing and I love that a character I’ve known for so long can surprise me.
Definitely feels like there more to her reason why she gave the speech, like someone forced her and I definitely think there’s more to the commonwealth.
Governor Milton and her son brought me back to Alexandria when the group first got there. Surviving off of other people’s backs. And still whining about it like brats. I can’t wait for her to go toe to toe with Rick.
Great issue
Choo Choo!!
Were there any zombies in this issue?
Not one zombie, would have been nice to see more movement at that train site and more with Eugene and Stephanie! I think that just having a cover like this one and then 3 seconds at that site is kind of a rip off. Cool to see the struggle at the Commonwealth but…. Not that we always need the walkers but it is the reason we tune in. Still love the direction, want to see more of the train action, that will be fun to see when Eugene gets that engine running and we see them mowing down walkers off the tracks!!! Was also cool to see Mercer and Princess knocking boots finally. And can’t wait to see Rick take over, if Dwight doesn’t kill him first, not sure where that was going at the end but D was pissed!
I don’t tune in for the zombies. They’re a backdrop. The real threats have always been people. As far as the cover, you could say this about MANY of the covers in the series. Lots of them are intentionally misleading. I felt like this one was actually pretty fair. Sure, we didn’t see MUCH of the train… but we saw the start of that idea. And it has huge potential to change civilization for the better.
The Train out of the x files, mulder with guys in stormtrooper outfits keeping watch out, just imagine Alien Walker DNA takes it to a whole new level!
Loved this issue. Eugene is pioneering civilization by fixing the train system. This is unlike anything I’ve seen before in this genre, it usually never takes the story this far and I love that TWD is. Dwight is starting to make me nervous because he is one of my partial characters and I don’t want him to push himself into a dangerous situation by challenging Rick and the Commonwealth. Rick doesn’t like the way this place works either, but he has a chance to reach through to Pamela to help her fix the system, you can already tell by the way she starts helping in the streets. Hopefully Dwight can hold his temper long enough to see that. He’s gone through too much to lose his position over this.
Great issue! I enjoyed the bits with Eugene and Stephanie, I really liked seeing more of the riot and just how Pamela & Rick reacted to the incident. The Mercer & Princess love/sex talk seemed like a bit much but its good to see her finally really connect with someone. As for the Dwight and Rick scene, it gave me major flashbacks to when Rick wanted to take over Alexandria in Issue #72 which was AWESOME. Great read!
Princess is annoying as hell….the issue as a whole was a meh…
