New World Order kicked into high gear with this huge world-building issue. We finally got a look inside the Commonwealth and met its leader (and yes, we have a new Governor in The Walking Dead). Is she someone to be trusted? Will the gang find what they’re looking for? And what will Michonne do after that insane ending? Let us know YOUR thoughts in the comments below for a chance to win a Robert Kirkman-signed copy of the issue. Best comment wins, and we can’t wait to hear what you thought of this issue!
UPDATE: We’re awarding TWO comment winners this time around. First, Negangirl5 for her excellent take on the issue and Governor Phillip for their excellent take on the cover! We’re excited you guys are digging the New World Order arc. Make sure to keep commenting on future issue discussions and YOU might win a Robert Kirkman-signed copy next time.
Previously: Eugene and company arrived in Ohio to meet Stephanie, but instead were ambushed by armed soldiers. After interrogating them, a man named Lance agreed to take the newcomers back to the Commonwealth. On the way, they stopped at the Wall of The Lost, filled with pictures of missing people. On it, Michonne finds a photo of herself, posted by her daughter, Elodie…
I felt Andrea’s vibe as our new Governor, Pamela Milton, interviewed Michonne. I’m of the opinion they can be trusted, but hey, I believed in Phillip/Brian Blake right up until the “Well stranger we feed them strangers..” line. Another terrific issue in the series that keeps me going. Thank you guys. Btw am I still 1st comment?
Really enjoyed this issue! I was crying at the end with the reunion. Too bad that won’t happen in the show since we already know what happened to Michoone’s son.
I think Stephanie and Eugene will make a cute couple. I can’t wait to find out more about her.
The princes is adding a great touch with the humor we neeeded.
Now I get why the description was “An Audience with a different kind of Governor”
I trust this Governor a little more then the last but something weird is definitely going on. It does seem that they protect their people but I got the impression that Governor Milton thinks the average person is beneath her. Which questions me on her humanity. She also comes across as a control freak and a dictator.
I can’t wait to see where we go from here. Will the Commonwealth unite with Alexandria and the other communities? Will Michonne bring her daughter back to Alexandria with her or stay at the commonwealth? What does Stephanie do at the commonwealth? Will Eugene bring her back or will he stay. Will Stephanie be the ally we need? Can’t wait!!
The ending was a beautiful. Great to see Stephanie. I’m a bit disappointed that Magna, Yumiko and Siddiq were almost completely frozen out of the issue but I get that it’s a big storyline for Eugene and Michonne and that stuff was great. Fascinating arc. Can’t wait for #177.
I still don’t know who to trust in Commonwealth.. great issue can’t wait for next months!
Illuminati confirmed. Role assignments etc, this is 100% new world order.
This issue was dope! The pacing was so perfect. First we get to see mama bear Michonne, who is ready take on all 50,000 Commonwealthers, surprisingly stealth her claws. Next, Stephanie and Eugene meet at long last, then we learn just enough information about this place to unsettle us. Enter theatrical Maxwell Hawkins, and we who get a peak into what the Commonwealth really values; titles. This is confirmed listening to the “governor” go on and on about order and function (how did Michonne not flinch at “Governor”?!) Probably because she’s DISTRACTED. I loved seeing her snap and spill her immediacy! But do we like this “Pamela Milton” character now, since she dropped everything to reunite a family, or is this a power-play to? Whatever wickedness is behind the veil of the CommonWealth’s facade, the thought was quickly dismissed by the Michonne and Elodie’s homecoming on that last page!
Great issue. Made greater because ROBERT KIRKMAN answered my fan letter in Letter Hacks!! I actually threw my comic down when I read my name! Winning the signed copy of this issue would be the icing on the cake!!!! Love you TWD!
One of the things I’ve always believed Rick Grimes was capable of was not only rebuilding civilization, but building something even better than what he had before. It’s an idea I haven’t thought much of lately, but something about his early speeches made me always wonder what kind of world Rick would leave his people with (even if he dies I believe his friends will still carry on his legacy to the end of the series). So far the commonwealth is seeming very similar to the world we have today and I can’t wait to see how our characters leave their mark on it. As powerful as the commonwealth seems, I think they are far less tough than our survivors, and I think whatever threat comes next in the long term, they will have to rely on our heroes to help see them through it. Or maybe something completely different will happen, this is the walking dead after all, can’t wait till next issue!
Sooo… Wheres collette? :/ i hope she isnt dead
Great start to the new story, hope to see more of this new community but also would like to see a check up on Rick and the rest of the gang.
Looks like Rick already slipped into the commonwealth. Check out the panel where Stephanie yells out Eugene’s name. Old Rick is staring get right at us. Hahaha. Excited as everyone else to see how this all goes.
I did a double take on that.
This New Illuminati Order seems very nice and safe from the surface, but inside, it may be very much different. Obviously, some people are of a lower category, then there are brutes, taking care of problems of all sorts, and then officials like Lance the Dickhead or Milton. For sure this governor is a mere puppet handled from the shadows. We will see.
How did Stephanie recognize Eugene? Anyway, they will be a fine couple together. And Michonne is absolutely going to interact with this Mercer guy, once she has recuperated from finding Elodie.
Brutes seem to be enjoying combat challenges, would be nice to see how would they deal with the Whisperers’ herd.
I don’t think she recognized Eugene, I think she just waited for the new group to arrive and yelled his name knowing he’d be there. I like your idea that she is the puppet of a shadow council, I hadn’t considered that at all.
All I could think when I saw Stephanie was that Thelma from Scooby Doo really let herself go.
LOLs!
I was crying right along with Michonne and Elodie. Michonne was ready to go Ricktator on those guys, lol! She had some great restraint but finally had to get to her main interest right now, her daughter, and not the New World Order or whatever they were trying to sell. Something’s up with them, and I didn’t like how they just brushed off the others because of their careers or jobs previously. I was getting The Governor vibes, and we know how that turned out.
I had stopped reading the comics around AOW, but I think I’m going to start again. I have to see how this all turns out for our group, but especially Rick and Michonne, my faves. Too bad Andre died on the show. Now, that would have been a tearjerker to have them reunite, She’s lost two sons on the show — still not over Carl:( — but is getting back both daughters hopefully in the comics.
Well apparently the Commonwealth does not need High School Science Teachers. And forget coffee shop baristas. But lawyers.. well of course! We could not get along without them! I thought that whole conversation was really weird. Also Stephanie’s reaction to Lance’s comment about her job made me think that there is something sinister going on. Hopefully Elodie can shed some light on that.
So happy for Michonne though!
Im still kind of Meh on this new storyline….I get the feeling that Lance or Pamela will try to recruit Michonne, Eugene, or somebody from the group to assassinate the other one resulting in a major death…
That would be wild, so many possibilities here
I thought I saw Rick there!! maybe he is on a secret mission to infiltrate the new found commonwealth…
Great issue as always! But something was missing from the new Governor… I’ve edited the cover accordingly ?
(Damn! Didn’t work so I’ll try again)
Handful of you FUCKTARDS downvoted my buddy’s awesome post here but he won himself a signed copy. NEENER NEENER NEENER!!! Fucktards.
Niceeeee??????????????????
I was shocked to see how great the new Governor of The Commonwealth was. She came off as being so cold and after meeting Lance in the previous issue, it was refreshing to see a humanized character in power who is complex upon the first introduction. I’m excited to read more!
Man, the leader of the commonwealth really likes blowing smoke up peoples’ asses. I’m glad Michonne handled it so well and saw through it. It was frustrating how high and mighty she came off when Michonne has absolutely no real reason to trust this woman who damn near expects her to be *thankful.*
Also, anyone noticed the guy who responded to Eugene’s position with “that simply won’t do”? Kinda creepy, eh? I’m thinking from the dialogue in this issue, the commonwealth has some kind of caste system in place for roles.
People seem to be saying this lady is like “the governor” but I don’t think so. I think she genuinely believes in what she says and has a very distant but intelligent and calculated philosophy about how the world runs. This is opposed to The Governor who simply sought power for his own narcissistic ego and sick pleasure and also opposed to Negan who embodied the philosophy of “might makes right.” It doesn’t make her evil in any way but it means her version of good might be much more pragmatic than we’re used to, even from our often morally ambiguous heroes.
Haven’t read it yet. But just looking at the cover gives me chills!
I’m waiting to see what the fate of Collette is, and possibly a hint as to what’s going on back in Alexandria without them there
I find this new arc interesting especially as it is pushing the idea of a new society based on nothing remotely democratic and while Alexandria is not exactly democratic itself it is coming across that the Commonwealth is far more regime based.
And all of this is taking place in a sequence of the longest absence of Rick from the comics, something I find telling. I don’t see him being involved in this arc at all which could potentially mean his absence for 7 months.
Should have added that I can not wait to follow how this group change the world around our survivors, exciting times.
