The Walking Dead is BACK with its first issue of 2019. Following Dwight’s shocking demise, the Commonwealth looks to move forward while betrayal heats up close by and drama arises abroad. But what did YOU think about the issue? Tell us in the comments for a chance to win a Robert Kirkman-signed copy! Best comment wins, so get to commenting. We have an inSANE year of Walking Dead ahead of us.
Previously: Dwight’s released from jail, more determined than ever to upset the power balance in the Commonwealth. But when Michonne calls a meeting to defuse the situation with Dwight and Rick, she surprises them with Governor Milton, who escalates the situation by ordering Dwight’s arrest, Dwight pulls a gun, and Rick quickly realizes there’s no talking Dwight down, and shoots him in the head himself. Now Rick not only blames Michonne for her handling of the situation, but he worries that he’s chosen the wrong side in this conflict.
Dwight’s legacy lives on in Laura, Mercer and other people. There will be blood. I have to give it to Lance, coming into a locker room to confront Mercer, when he is pretty much surrounded by his people. Dwight ignited a wick of a powder keg, which is now very close to the big boom, and the next issue will show it. Nice to see Kirkman keeping his word and giving more development to Sophia. And our boy Carl is not very subtle, but in the end, he delivered the message.
Props to Magna for taking even more responsibility and sending a scouting party. It certainly has a great line-up, almost same as the #188 cover hinted, just switch Maggie for Dante and Carl. Too bad they will meet and kill the Princess along the way, we will miss her so bad (just a wish).
“My SAVIOR Rick Grimes” Oh Kirkman I know that wasn’t accidental…
This cover killed me. I was so worried Michonne and Rick’s relationship wouldn’t recover. I admire that they’re just (BEST) friends in the comic series as opposed to the couple they are in the show. I love both dynamics, but as per usual, the comics win. The two share an intimacy that is unique to the closest of friendships, they can be vulnerable in front of one another but still pull each other forcefully out of self-pity slumps. I’m team platonic #RICHONNE.
This issue was solid. I love when we get to see what’s happening everywhere, like Sofia’s date! I adore her. I still want her and Carl to get together especially after his explanation to Lydia on why he isn’t. Sofia has been by his side for years and she too has suffered unbelievable tragedy. Carl’s the one who distanced himself from her after he was shot. It was Sofia who preserved the relationship. Lydia is so needy and dumb. I don’t like her. Whatever…
I had a feeling Princess’ cheerfulness was a defense mechanism. Keep fleshing out her character please. It’s interesting that Carl used the phrasing “Tie me up and lock me away” to Maggie in this same issue. I can’t wait to see what this year of TWD brings. PLEASE STOP with the letters about ending this series. I would be unconsolable.
Another great issue.
I just love everyone at the Hilltop. Sophia, Maggie, Carl, Aaron & Jesus. I’m excited to see what will happen when they go to the commonwealth
Wow on Princess backstory! I love how Kirkman addresses real life topics into the characters and that’s what makes us love TWD. It’s real besides the walking dead people. Lol
Finally the other leader of Commonwealth. At the end that walked in on Mercer’s speech. I’m assuming he’s the leader we heard Milton tell Rick about so many issues ago. I really wanted to know more and more about the other communities and who is above Milton, so I’m excited to end the issue there.
Anyone else having friends confuse Milton and Georgie when discussing the comics? I’ve noticed it recently. Georgie doesn’t seem anything like Governor Milton to me. Governor Milton would never drive around in a van trading with people. Her status is to night for that. Lol
Thanks for another great issue!
Happy New Year and thanks for the Christmas card
Amazing Issue overall.
Love the fall out of Dwight’s death and how the build to everything going to hell has been. I really enjoy the tension between Rick and Michonne and how this place has really blinded Michonne, but how can you blame her, after finding her daughter alive, how can you not be moved to believe in this place despite all the flaws. Rick see’s it and so did Dwight and Rick is still trying to find a way through it all despite how much he has mounted against him. Really a amazing struggle that seems it will all come to a head soon.
The story of Princess was heart breaking and true to Kirkman writing style. In this world no matter how bright the person is there is something dark within them. Her leaving really lead Mercer to making the call he did and being influenced the way he was. Again leading to another interesting development. I really see all hell breaking loose in the next issue as the whole guard I doubt will let him go down. Should be interesting to see if they will fold and fall in line or revolt.
Lastly the involvement of those left behind. The background story with Sophia, Carl and Lydia is fun teenage melodrama and curious if it will develop into something more down the road.
Glad they are not content with just sitting back and wanting to know what is going on. The cavalry is coming and glad Carl and Jesus are involved. Can’t enjoy the two of them on the show anymore but so very glad to see them still alive in the comics and on their way to check things out and possibly save the day. Will be interesting to see as well if this group runs into princess and gets the news about Dwight.
The set up is all there and it just builds and gets more exciting with each and every issue.
SO at first I was like what the hell, this is going to be an awful issue, then I was like wow, this is interesting. I think that Mercer and the other soldiers are going to revolt for sure and over throw that shit!!
Turned out to be a good issue despite the slow start. I really do like that we have kind of checked in on most of the people we have been wondering about, I think that Princess is getting out just in time and will warn Sediq and the others on the road, but maybe not and they will show up in time to get Rick and Michonne and co. out of there. I guess we will see…
This was a boring issue till the last page….
Still reminiscing the times when an issue was memorable right on up to the next one & kep me impatient for the next one. These days, it may sit on the comic box for about a week before it’s even read.
