WINNER UPDATE!
I bet you thought we forgot! I’ll have you know the fact that I haven’t picked a winner for issue #143 has kept me up at night for weeks BUT NO LONGER! I made Johnny help me go through the comments and we have deemed… MRLUCILLE as the best comment! He wins with ONE WORD. “F**k.” He used a period! Not even an exclamation mark! And then he drops a Negan pic. Well played. It’s pretty much exactly how I felt at the end of #143.
This issue of The Walking Dead really made a huge turn for what’s to come for The Walking Dead #144, the final issue of Compendium 3. With Carl’s lash at his father for why he’s not going back to Alexandria to Alpha’s weapon to attack the communities, I saw something that wasn’t from those two, but the relationship between Eugene and Rosita.
At the start of their appearance of this issue, you can see that Eugene’s still together with Rosita after his knowledge of her affair and announcement of her pregnancy. Eugene insists that she stops getting clothes, while she explains that she needs the motivation to lose her baby fat after she gives birth to her child. The moment in which their relationship starts to really develop is when Eugene replies, “That’s honestly not even remotely a concern for me. I’ll take you in whatever size or shape you’re comfortable in. I just want you to be happy”, showing whatever happens in their relationship, he’ll be there for her no matter what.
This is similar to another relationship in The Walking Dead: Rick and Lori’s. While Rick was still comatose, Lori needed someone to be with, and that someone was Shane, Rick’s best friend. After Rick woke up and found her and Carl, Shane is killed and Rick learns that Lori was with Shane. Although Rick’s significant other had an affair with another, he still took her under his wing and cared for her until her unfortunate death in Issue #48, alongside Judith and many more. Rick processed the information that his newborn child was possibly Shane’s, but threw it away. He wanted to take care of Judith as his own, if she wasn’t his. Just like Eugene in Issue #133. Both Eugene and Rick did not care whether or not their significant other’s child wasn’t theirs; they only want to care for them and their S.O., and forget the past.
I really hope there’s even more story to Eugene and Rostia’s love lives, and possibly more connections to Rick and Lori’s!
I have like a bad feeling that something bad’s gonna happen to Rosita… Like Negan butchery…
After all, remember that the Kirkman intended to kill a pregnant Lori by psycho-cell-dude Thomas Richards…
To Ludo-Z,
You may be right. But hopefully Rosita and her child and Eugene will all be okay. I really wish Kirkman will release his CUTTING ROOM FLOOR Hardcover so we can learn more about the Lori/Thomas Richards fight and other things.
And just to let people know, I am TEBUK, but I just changed my name to my newer ID.
It seems to me like the zombie apocalypse has made people care more about the people around them. It doesn’t matter to Rick or Eugene that the woman they are in love with is pregnant by someone else. They know they have love for them and sort of a duty to protect them and the baby they carry. It’s a refreshing change from what happens in the real world. The people of Alexandria have made a world within a world for their people and others to come and it makes me wish in my heart of hearts that there really was a place like that, where people actually cared for others and were safe from the outside world. Carl, man, that kid gets under my skin sometimes. It just seems like sometimes he just doesn’t see the obvious. I mean come on, you go to an enemy camp you’ve been told might be dangerous, they show you stuff and then say you cannot leave. Just because of a girl? Come on Carl, wake up!!!! The fair was a good idea, getting people out and about and mingle. But it makes me wonder, what is coming next? Are the wolves going to attack? Is someone going to mess up and do something the group will regret? Have to wait and see I guess. But I am proud of Eugene for stepping up. That’s real love and devotion.
Didn’t I already talk about the whole Eugene and Love?
Fuck.
This has to be Rick’s reaction to the HORDE! And some scared in the mix.
shit
I think Ezekiel is dead alpha said she ran into trouble on the road Ezekiel was on th road looking for michone and andrea, dante and michone were surrounded by whispers so why would alpha just walk through the crowd and kill them
just gonna add on how messed up would it e if ne of the whisperers wore an Ezekiel skin
this is the only thing i can say right now HOLY SHIT!!!
one word: WOW!
The apocalypse has really changed everyone for the better I think and that is truly evident in this issue! I am so happy for Eugene right now and how he’s developed into a stronger character, unlike the old, wimpy character that we first met.
As well, WHAT AN END TO COMPENDIUM 3!! I really liked the idea of the fair and how people are outside, interacting, but this really triggers something in my brain that thinks “oh, somethings not right here…” and I can’t wait for that to be revealed in 144!!
;-; I hope Michonne is okay. Andrea and Dante too… but mostly Michonne. And I want Carl to make it out fine, he is my favourite character and I am scared for him. xD
Great issue, Carl was awesome, Eugene was awesome… and for once I actually think I liked Rick this issue.
Yeah, it looks like Ricky seems to realize he might have anger issues…
But none of these characters are dead… yet.
Holy crap! I was terrified when I saw the horde on the last page. It’s amazing that that many walkers can pile up together.
I feel the same way about this issue as Alpha feels about Rick Grimes….Not impressed. Seems like a few propane tanks and bullets can handle a bunch of zombies that close together. I don’t think the Whisperers have much ammo either and Ricks crew has more than they know what to do with. If Eugene can make bullets he can make explosives. I think Alpha didn’t get a good enough assessment of what Alexandria really has. It could all blow over but I think the Whisperers are the ones who don’t want to mess with our beloved communities. If they cross a line Alpha will find out why Rick Grimes has made his name what it is.
I don’t know about those first couple of sentences there, but I’m with ya on all the rest!!
Welcome, Bassie! Finally read #143, huh? Sorry about how you got it, though!
oh Gawd!!! Michonne ,Darling! Please be OK! However,MRGA7 now has me concerned about Ezekiel DAMMIT!!! Oh ye, i guess that Horde is an issue too. Nothin’ a lil gasoline bath and some matches wont fix. The apocalypse needs a good forest fire once in a while……as long a it doesn’t kill the power couple Ezekiel and Michonne! #PlzNo
God, this bitch Alpha is fucking crazy. They may not be actively looking for blood like the Governor or even Negan but these people are gonna have to GO if civilization wants to gain a foothold in the world again.
Also, we’re finally seeing the damaging effects that scar has had on his core as a character. It has really fucked him up. And yes, he’s being totally hormonal but he does have a point when he says “here’s someone that doesn’t flinch.” In a way, Lydia just looking at him like another person makes him feel normal. He still clearly loves his Dad but that scar is truly wicked. He’s always been insecure of it. I mean, imagine every time people see you they either stare at you or turn away uncomfortably not wanting to look at you? If you can imagine that scar for one moment on a real person what would you do around that person? It’s just so impossible to ignore no matter how hard you try. It’s not something you can just with glasses or a pair of shades and then everything’s good.
I don’t think Andrea, Michonne and Dante are dead… yet. Next issue’s gonna probably bad in that sense.
Loved Rick & Carl in this issue. Teenage rebellion, TWD style…
I believe we’ve already seen a larger herd in Vol 10 “What we become”, anyways, it’s still scary as shit.
What someone already said, was probably Ezekie who was killed when he was out looking for Michonne.
I think Carl is boarding the crazy train to psychoville. “This world is my father…and I’ve got it’s looks! ”
Ok… Well, at least he’s starting to adjust to life with Lydia’s crazy family…
Ok well im shitting because of this issue, loving carl and all his shennanigans and i cant wait to see what the fuck was up with alphas dirty blade, im hoping to god she didnt just bust some friendly faces and ive got my fingers crossed that she lets everyone walk before rick does some nutty shit, cause he isnt going to just let the whisperers attack his people and i can promise that a little bit of chaos will go very VERY far with a crowd that large, plus rick is smart as piss so im not actually all that worried, carl impressed me alot too by being so assertive and i really dont blame him for being soooo in love with lydia, not only is it pretty shitty out there with all the dying and whatnot but hes young and the sex didnt help hahaha, i loved it though and im excited for more so keep up the great work as always
HI! It’s me!! ANDY!!!
Ouch. I was down-voted. :/
I’ve known these whisperers were terrifying from the moment we met them but I wasn’t expecting this. Finishing the issue I was afraid. I don’t think propane bombs are going to do it here…the books seem to follow the comic universe and Rev. Garlitz found out the hard way that the ones that don’t explode properly just turn into a flaming megaherd.
I think it is genuinely exciting to see Carl start to become his own person, and that it is a natural progression for his character. Imagine you are the son of the President of the US or a celebrity or a CEO of a major company, you are always going to get special treatment because of who your father/parents are. Unlike most children of the uber rich or powerful who end up riding the coattails of their parents, Carl wants to make his own identity. That is something so relate-able to anyone that reads these books. Carl doesn’t want to be treated well because he is Rick Grimes son, he wants to be accepted for his flaws (big ole eye socket on his face) and he believes that he found someone that he can finally do that with. It might be just be a teenager being a teenager (we have all been there with our first love), and while I think that the zombie apocalypse has aged Carl rapidly, having any sort of love interest is something completely new for him. You can’t really blame him for wanting to stay behind and (much like his father) protect the people that he really cares about.
One thing that gives me hope…. from what we saw Alpha only saw the swords and spears and she may have no idea about the ammo and gun stockpile these guys have, It has been mentioned a few times now.
Something tells me that were going to stand a lot better in this fight than Alpha is expecting.
I hope Ezekiel is ok, He does seem like the only person Alpha could have come into contact with on her way back and it is unlikely that she will kill 3 people that are already captured from what we’ve seen so far.
One thing im hoping im right about that doesnt have much to do with this issue in particular, Is Connie one of Michonnes daughters?
Another incredible issue.
When Carl made his stand against Rick, I couldn’t help but think of the Romeo/Juliet aspect of this situation.
Rick doesn’t want to let Carl stay with the Whisperers, Alpha won’t let her daughter leave, so we’re kind of at a stalemate.
When I saw the title “Union”, it made me think there may be a marriage on the horizon.
Rick and Andrea may have the craziest in-laws EVER.
I mean, I’ve heard of not following for a girl on the wrong side of the tracks, but….DAMN!
I love your “In-Laws” part! HA!
10/10 issue.
Five thoughts:
– Carl Grimes (????) and Sophia are my OTP so if Carl could just NOT be with Lydia, that’d be great. The scene with him talking about how Lydia is the only one who understands him was cute though but still. I’m not liking the Carl-Lydia relationship
– Maggie and Jesus’ friendship is so cute. I hope to see more of them in the future and I’m expecting that when the unavoidable Maggie-Rick confrontation happens, Jesus will be the mediator, along with Andrea (if Andrea is still alive)
– Speaking of Andrea, did Alpha kill someone? I don’t think so, I think she probably just killed a walker or something but what if she did? Did she kill someone back at the fair? Did she kill Dante? If so, maybe when Rick tells Maggie, they’ll have a confrontation?
– Michonne still likes Ezekiel! Awwwwww! This feels too happy for The Walking Dead. Something must’ve happened to Michonne.
– Rick just got SERVED! Alpha just went full bad-ass on his ass. I think Rick’s face on issue #144 must be him strenuously trying to decide whether he is afraid or mad at The Whisperers
Two weeks! So excited for 144.
I actually think that Carl was being a little coy with the explosion at his dad. I think he is actually hiding the fact that he is just trying to get into this group so he can protect his own a little better. His loyalty still lies with where he is from and he knows that. I don’t think he would be stupid enough to leave his entire life for a one night stand. It’s just not believable in his character.
I am sad we didn’t see what Alpha’s knife is from, I don’t think it is from one of the three Rick left behind because that would be too easy. They were all subdued. The way it was set up makes me think Ezekiel unfortunately, which would make me sad.
Also how the hell did Alpha get from the fair back to her people so fast? That is what startled me the most 😛
How does Alpha travel so fast????
Maybe she’s really Mo Farrah…
Time is random during issues. In Issue #142’s Letter Hacks, Robert Kirkman explains how some issues might skip a day or two without announcing it. Also, for all we know, maybe Alpha was already at the Fair before Rick, Andrea, Michonne, and Dante left OR Rick and his crew had possibly been waiting for a while before Alpha’s appearance at The Whisperer’s Camp.
This was a great issue. It’s so many questions and honestly i loved that last page. Alpha and the whisperers can move heards. Do i need to stress how dangerous that is. Carl is becoming his own man. Rick should’ve established a truce right there. i swear I’m worried for whoever may lose their life on this road trip. If a real union doesn’t start with confrontation brewing blood for blood will be real. The Walking dead continues to amaze me
The Communities were already herding Roamers before we saw The Whisperers’ cattle. Good inference to the issues’ titles. 😀
Even in a zombie apocalypse, a teenager becomes infatuated with another and blindly refuses their parent’s reasonable advice…….some things never change.
Relationships seemed to be a big theme in this issue….Eugene and Rosita, Ezekiel and Michonne, Carl and Lydia, Carl and Rick…..and they’re ALL stressed or damaged relationships. All of this in an issue titled “A Union”…..love the irony.
When I first saw the title “A Union” I definitely expected some weird Lydia-Carl marriage/joining ceremony. And I’m kind of glad that didn’t happen yikes.
Yeah…me too. I’m not sure Alpha’s group is the ceremony type though….at least not the kind that would throw rice or tie cans to the back of a horse 🙂 I did like how that one guy from Alpha’s group told Rick his son was a handful. They’ve treated Carl pretty well. Maybe Carl and Lydia’s bond will somehow unite the two groups in some way? Maybe “A Union” is meant to refer to Rick and Alpha’s first meeting?….I’m reaching.
LIZZY! I MISS YOU!!
I’m really thinking that alpha killed Ezekiel.
Who knows? I can’t wait for Issue #144, though! Maybe we’ll find out there! It’s also the LAST issue of Compendium 3!
Great issue! While I am hoping that it was just Ezekiel that was killed ( I know that sounds bad) I am thinking that Alpha took at least one of Rick’s party out. Remember Alpha said that she would not have taken Rick to Carl. OR maybe she killed some of her own folks since they were left guarding Rick’s party and she didn’t approve. Something tells me her justice is meted out pretty much like Maggie’s. Not Rick’s. I, for one, don’t understand why she didn’t just kill Carl outright when he followed Lydia, but perhaps curiosity kept her from doing that.
As for the conversation between Rick and Carl, I agree with many that Carl is just being a typical rebellious teen. He is smart but naive at that age. I thought it was interesting that Carl said that he was made in the new world because of his disfigurement, however Rick never countered that by saying anything about his own missing hand, and bad leg, or Andrea’s bad facial scar. EVERYONE is scarred now.
I love the transformation of Eugene from being the kid that was bullied in school to becoming a leader in the community. I forgot to mention in the last issue how cool it was that Rick asked him to take charge of the Fair in his absence.
My final comment on the issue was the interesting smirk that Lydia had on her face each time she was shown during the RIck/Carl conversation. What’s up with that? It made me wonder if I am over analyzing her expressions or if they have a deeper, more sinister meaning….
I thought I was the only one that was wondering if Lydia was actually smirking!! I just got that sense about it. I don’t trust her!
Good call on the disfigurement of others! Maybe Rick decided not to counter because he knew that would make things worse, being how headstrong Carl is. Also not good to show any little bit of division in front of the opposition. Still, that just might come back around & at a moment that will be even more impactful.
Good to know I wasn’t just imagining the smirk! Yeah, I do not trust her. Add a cute, smart girl plus a teen aged, disfigured and self conscious boy in love, add first time sex and it equals trouble! I didn’t think about Rick holding back because he might show a weakness to the opposition, great catch there!
It will be interesting to see how this pans out…
That’s one badass bitch with an endless supply of skins!
LOL!
I sure can’t see Ezekiel causing unavoidable trouble… least of all to a beautiful lady not in disguise… but then again, there is that issue #145 cover. Kirkman sure knows what he’s doing!
What needs to happen (assuming Rick makes it back alive which based on the future covers he does):
Rick: Negan… Congrat’s. You just made Parole. You are now my Liuetenant. There’s trouble in the land. Go out and do what you’re best at while I lay down the Rictatorship once again.
What will likely happen based on this and upcoming covers… Death, Despair, Broken lives and sadness.
But maybe, just maybe, Maggie punches Rick because of said parole. I give it a .000001% chance.
Are we all forgetting about the 2 year ammo stockpile these guys have? I don’t recall Alpha knowing anything about that? as far as i saw, She has only seen the swords and spears etc
I see said the blind man.
Good catch.
Yeah. That must the reason why she went to Earl! She wanted to see their weaponry! Luckily, she didn’t see anything else… I hope.
I thought all those “walkers” Were all Alpha’s people with skin suits. If so, wow.
The cb radio Eugene bartered for.. If he had 2 of them would be great for drawing roamers away, or leading them into a trap of some kind to dispose of them. Or with 2 could put one out somewhere and use it like an intercom or negotiating device. Great issue.
One last afterthought, is there some component to cb radios that can be salvaged to do something else useful?
