The Walking Dead 142 hits stores this week and this is YOUR post to discuss it! No spoilers until it’s out, but that last panel spells trouble. And Sean Mackiewicz has the best letter hacks sign off I’ve ever seen.
I’ll scour the comments with a fine-toothed comb to find the comment that I like the most. Maybe it’s funny. Maybe it’s brilliant. Maybe it’s both. But whichever ends up being my favorite will be getting a Robert Kirkman-signed copy of The Walking Dead issue 142.
COMMENT WINNER!
BarbaLucy takes this issue’s discussion! I was curious who would drive home the point of the confrontation between Rick and Maggie. I’m curious about that as well. AND, she (or he) posted before the 146 cover came out (I think—I know we posted a bit late this month). Also the call on who will come back from their trip to the Whisperers. Who indeed..? Remember, 143 is out NEXT WEEK! HUZZAH!
Takeaways from this wonderful (as always) issue:
1. Carl is not some sex crazed kid who is chasing love. He recognizes a serious threat and is actual doing a very adult thing. Rick should be proud.
2. You don’t mess with Jesus. It doesn’t take much for him to calm Rick down. Just soft words and a menacing stare.
3. Is Michonne going to be the big death we have been expecting for some time? This worries me. The preview of the cover with her katana standing upright in a puddle of blood tied with her going on the rescue mission. This might signify some future broken hearts.
4. Rick might be the instigator in a new war. Alpha, in a very sly move shows up at the fair. Say she likes what she sees and realizes the folks aren’t a threat. Meanwhile, Rick and his gang show up and basically start a war that didn’t need to be started.
5. Speaking of posses… that was one hell of an illustration. Wouldn’t mind a poster sized image of it, or at least a larger sized variant. Signed by Kirkman and crew. Hint hint.
At any rate, wonderful job and artwork by all involved. This story arc has me on my toes and even more nervous than all out war. You know something bad is bound to happen.
Oh… and for Brian. Funny. Brilliant.
The poster thing 🙂 What he said.
For #5, are you talking about the 2-page spread or the AWESOME art I posted below? I’d LOVE a T-shirt of the one below!

Cbr just go sign up for there newsletter it has everything & they always have the new covers before there posted on here.
OMG what a GREAT issue this was so many crazy things going on i couldnt believe on the last page alpha was at the fair i have a feeling that a big war is coming and i believe that more then likely rick will be the 1 that starts it. So im begenning to think that carl will end up staying with the whispers i am just so overwhelmed with everything that happened in this issue please hurry up june 24th i am dying to kno what happens.
That moment you realize that there’s 2 issues left for Compendium 3 to end… o_o
I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a cow in the show, what a valuable commodity that would be in this world. That would be a commodity worth fighting for in an apocalyptic world.
Wow….so now theres cross infiltration…but it looks like the Alpha can be someone who might stumble on a certain caged animal?!? Meanwhile Dantes description of the whisperers might set the rescue teams frame of mind to “take no prisoners” …. who knows … maybe im just being pessimistic…maybe the Alpha enjoys the community and decides to join one of the groups? LOL
I think you got something there when you said alpha might stumble upon a certain caged animal, it makes perfect sense to me now you’ve got rick, michonne, and andrea all gone looking for carl & you have alpha there at the fair. Alpha told carl that she needed to findout more about his people so it would make perfect sense for her to go snooping around the houses there as well so she will go to ricks house and go look in the basement and find negan and he will feed her a bunch of BS and talk her into helping him get out because when she sees him locked up down there her whole thought of ricks group will change. Wouldn’t that be crazy tho to have negan join alpha’s group and become one of the whispers I think the last issue for compendium #3 will end with negan and alpha returning to the whispers camp and negan seeing carl.
Its not like the keys to the cell are magically going to be hanging up on the wall in the basement. After the last debacle, they are probably in Rick’s pocket. Even if she stumbles upon Negan, she’s got no way to break him out. Plus, Alpha does not seem to be one that is impressed by a plethora of cuss words.
If we have learned anything about Alpha it is that she is smart and does not want to simply run train on whomever she comes across. It is becoming clear that she sees the worth in the community system, and I know one place full of weirdo’s that will be looking for a new leader. Alpha in control of the Sanctuary will be an invaluable source of strength for whatever threat is coming next.
Who will have to power to oppose Grimes’ Unified Territories?
Holy Jesus! THAT ENDING!! I expected a lot of things but not that!! It really felt like the Lost Season 4 finale when we find John Locke/Jeremy Bentham in the coffin during the flash forwards!
Loved the old school reunion with the Rick/Andrea/Michonne team up!!
Oh boy… I really can’t wait for the next issue!
The Others have invaded the Hilltop and they are coming for the pregnant girl! Be Safe Rosita!
Namaste!
Namaste!
Something is going to go down in issue 142 – 144, we know that 144 is going to be a “great capping-off point”. Could Rick’s fate be revealed? Will the whisperers attack? Will Carl get skinned? Personally, I think, if ANYONE were to kill Negan, I want it to be Maggie, the reason, because that “monster” killed Glenn. I would DIE for Maggie to avenge Glenn. IT HAS TO HAPPEN!
(SO EXCITED!)
No comments on who is found on page 15?
Rescue party? The gang’s back, guys and gals!
… Don’t think they’ll all make it back, though.
And also, loved that letter hack question about the person who “dropped their I pad in shock” after Olivia fucked up with Negan’s lock becase I love when Sean and Kirkman get super sassy.
God Damn, they should have had a sign in book and a list of people from each community, Also a bald chick just walks in and no one knows her, you’d think questions would get asked. F’in loving the story right now, keep up the great work!!
Secret fair #1 with surprise moondragon cliffhanger! loved it!!!
I enjoy the idea of Alpha becoming the new leader of the Saviors, because I like her much beta than I like Negan ( ;
I definitely see Alpha setting Nrgan free. Also after reading the part where Andrea was tearing up and talking about how great everything is, to me is a dead giveaway she is next to die. If she does in fact set Negan free Carl and Negan face to face again would be super sweet!
will Negan be the savior? Carl the right hand man? and on another note….. Ezekial at the fair?
The Maggie/Rick confrontation is what really intrigued me. Obviously Rick did what any dad would and went off to find his son. If and when he returns with or without Carl, what will be the relationship between him and Maggie? Will this, paired with the execution of Gregory, cause a serious rift between the two communities? If so, the stage is perfect for Maggie to be usurped from power, notice the looks on most of the Hilltop faces after her little “This can’t happen again” speech.
Who will come back alive from the posse? I think at least one of the big 3 will die. A major character death is due.
Nice work guys.
Well this was amazing, i dont know why but ive been loving these politics issues, 141 was easily one of the best and with the setup we just got i can only imagine 143 is going to be out of this world, im impressed with carl and im actually a little impressed with alpha too, although i know things are gonna get horrible fast, im pumped up for the fair and cant wait to see what happens, nailed it again guys!
While Rick and the others are gone, this is where Magna’s Group will step up
And with Eugene left holding the fort – goodness help them
I absolutely loved Carl in this issue. He’s on a mission, and will not be distracted or swayed by what he’s seeing. It feels like he’s finally shedding his youth completely, and taking his father’s approach: No bullshitting, be as blunt as you can when things are important to you or if you feel like someone is trying to persuade you against your decisions. I’m just curious as to what his end game is? Is he just doing this for a girl, or is this something he’s doing for his people?
Outside of that:
It was great to see Michonne again… though I can’t help but feel like she’s been put so far out of the main story that she’s probably going to be killed soon.
It doesn’t look like Maggie’s community is very happy with her decision (and honestly, neither am I… especially after her BS excuses/apologies after the fact). This, coupled with Dwight not wanting to lead the Saviors, makes me wonder if Ezekiel may forfeit his role if something were to happen to Michonne… leaving a potential for a massive power vaccuum throughout the communities if all three lose/leave the leadership positions.
Alpha is one sly fox. Love the look of the character, and really hope she turns out to be an ally. It appears that Kirkman is following a western storyline, with Rick’s communities playing the rising civilization, and Alpha’s group playing the natives. Should be interesting to watch it all unfold.
Hell yeah. Carl was a bit blinded by going to save Lydia but now that he sees the Whisperers and their pointless bullshit he’s calling them on it. I don’t think he has a real “endgame,” he’s just calling it as he sees it without any real regard of them being “Lydia’s people.”
Damn, I did not see that last page coming!
Great issue all around. At first I thought it was weird that Gregory’s death was just brushed over, but then I realized they never really told Rick what happened.
Jesus only says “Gregory tried to kill her” after Maggie says her plate was full lately.
Did the two of them purposely leave this bit of information out or was it too much to drop on him with the whole Carl situation?
I agree with the other comments that Rick is gonna screw this up. It’s what he does.
It’s been a while since we saw the old “damn it Rick, what are you doing?!”
The cover for issue 145 is making me think that compendium 3 will start in the same fashion as compendium 2 with Michonne stabbing Tyreese’s beheaded head. I wonder who will be the major death in 144 Andrea, Michonne or Rick? Personally I think it would be a good time for Rick to go, The Walking Dead has evolved to the point where the story can continue without Rick being needed and it will still thrive. This would be an incredible thing for a series to continue on without the “main” character. Plus whenever you have a character that is bald with an awesome beard that is the moral center of the comic/show you can pretty much say your goodbyes.
I’d go on to debate that. Rick is still Rick Grimes. Nothing will stop him from getting back to Carl, or finding Carl. Not all moral characters die, I’d even say Rick’s morality stems from his immorality. Rick hasn’t gotten weak, he’s accepted the role and title of leader. He makes sacrifices to make a society thrive. He’s thinking big picture, and where Alexandria needs to go. The comics can easily go on without him, I can’t argue that. It doesn’t feel like the ‘right’ time to die. If there’s anyone one soul that should claim Rick’s life, it should be Negan. Negan is Rick’s polar opposite, the only ‘villain’ to stand up to and kill many of Rick’s people. And so far, doesn’t look like Negan’s getting out anytime soon. I’m waiting for the issue that Rick is killed in, but I sincerely doubt it’ll be him to go in 144. My money would be on Michonne.
I’m not saying Rick is weak but I think his role has been fulfilled. We’ve seen him at his lowest and at his highest, we know if shit goes bad that Rick can handle it but I think it’s time for someone else to take up the mantle. Personally I would really like to see Magna take up a bigger role. I don’t think Negan should take out Rick, I think the best way to have a new villain is for them to take out THE Rick Grimes. Morale would be at an all time low and with how good things have been lately it would be an interesting shake up. Imagine a massacre at the fair and Rick Grimes being gone, no actual leader it would be chaos and watching a new crew of leaders rebuild a civilization would make for an interesting story.
I just want to say omg. … Omg…OMG!!!!!!!!!! Do anybody realized what blood for blood is going to be. Alpha that smooth?????? Rick didn’t take into consideration Dante warning. I did think that maggie Rick confrontation was intriguing i hope there’s not a civil war brewing while another all out war could be coming. I feel like Carl is carrying himself just a tad bit erratic but strong. Again blood for blood is going to be crazy. And it’s Michonne’s sword covered in blood. Omg the walking dead is getting crazy, idk who might die but i know if Rick and company slay any whisperers their may be more than one major character deaths. This is the first time in a while I’ve worried about a death on the horizon but with everything going on and so much happening it’s bound to take off again. I hope magna and her crew come across alpha and see through her and helps capture her to help give the Alexandrians an advantage over the Whisperers. Idk i just know that i might cry yep i just might cry. I can’t wait to see what happens next
I think the obvious biggest question we should be asking here is how on earth Alpha keeps her head that smooth.
THIS:
T-shirt!!
Or poster. I’d buy the shit out of that poster
REGULATORS!! Mount Up!
Gotta be handy with the steel, if you know what I mean… earn your keep.
First and foremost thank you Skybound for doing these open discussion threads for the fans, it’s things like this that truly set you apart. But, thats enough dick pulling. Moving on to issue #142.
Kind of a filler issue, not a lot of action, I mean I get every issue can’t be Michonne popping the governors eye(and asshole) out with a spoon, or Negan taking Glenns head and turning it into mulch (from my two favorite issues), but still its great to finally see Maggie and Rick have part one of their overdue conversation. As expected Rick sets off into the wild on a rescue mission, like Carl needs that noise, and who follows Rick, Michonne and Andrea… Andrea never goes on missions with him. She has always stayed and watched the fort or something like that. Her going out this time with Rick just seems too casual for it to be. But having a team up of the original crew, the few who are left, going out to kick ass is a very nice development.
I love how Carl is unapologetically Carl no matter who he is around. When he and Alpha are having that convo and Carl takes a shot at her with the halloween mask slight, it reminded me of why Carl is my favorite. He’s like “oh did I just insult you and your entire groups way of life and survival?” Hi Carl Grimes nice to meet you. He doesn’t take shit or back up from anyone in any situation, and whats best is he is usually right. A true born leader.
Now on to Alpha, can you say hypocrite, geez she kills anybody, without warning, who comes into her territory, which isn’t known to anyone but them, and then threatens everyone at hilltop to keep away. After all that she then decides to sneak into the fair for information? You can’t have it both ways. You can’t kill people from hilltop for simply coming into your territory and then go gallivanting around in those same people’s lands. I hope Maggie realizes who she is and without warning just walks up to her and stabs her to death. Its only fair (like a nerd pun totally intended).
This issue built me up for the next one and left me with one question, who is about to die? Come to think of it, thats what every issue does. Thanks for the comment space Skybound keep up the wonderful work.
The first compendium ended in disaster
The second ended on a note of high hopes
Still cant put my finger on how this one will turn out
This Has Been such a Badass Issue, Can not wait to see how things go in the next one…..
what an Ending..
YOU DON’T FUCK WITH SOMEONE WHO HAS JESUS IN THEIR CORNER! Gregory had to learn that the hard way…and Rick may have to as well, if there’s any truth behind the newest revealed cover. That being said, Maggie is totally conflicted with the decision she made. She knew that Gregory had to go, but immediately back-tracked (as much as you can after executing someone) after the hanging by making it known she didn’t like what she did or want to do it again. Maggie IS Rick…just a past version of him….and better looking.
Alpha does not seem to be looking for a fight. I think she realizes that would put her own people in danger, and she seems to hold surviving in high regard. For this reason, I think any conflict with her group will be a misunderstanding.
That page showing our heroes on the horses…that’s as visually epic as The Walking Dead gets!
I think Kirkman has set up the story well for the deaths of both Michonne and Andrea. With Rick giving Michonne a figurative kick in the ass to come to the fair, and with Andrea’s new-found happiness with her current life, there’s no telling what is coming. I hope neither happens…but if I had to, I’d put my money on Michonne.
Also, I’d like to say that there are a lot of characters and events that make up the awesomeness that is The Walking Dead….but The Walking Dead will NOT be The Walking Dead without Rick. He has started us out on this journey and has been with us throughout. We discovered this world WITH him! So to everyone saying it’s Rick’s time to go……WHAT?!
I don’t get the thing about wanting Rick killed off. His character still holds plenty of weight in the story… plenty of life there to give. In fact, he is still the central part of the story, if you ask me. He will be the one the Whisperers have to contend with; he is the one that is in somewhat of a contrast to Maggie; he is the one that is at the forefront of Negan’s mind; he is seemingly the only one that thinks keeping Negan alive is the better option & will have to answer for any consequences stemming from that; he will be the one that has to regulate whatever situation arises with the Saviors & Dwight stepping down; he is most likely the one that has any chance of keeping Michonne in check. I was imagining maybe when all’s well & it seems that these issues have all been ironed out & Rick is 100% the leader EVERYONE wants, that’s when the simple act of a walker bite takes him out. New story… Carl’s story… The Last Man Standing.
Maybe you can attribute all that to the strength of the supporting characters. Rick isn’t any less important than he has been in the past, but the characters surrounding him (some with almost as much history) are so interesting/awesome/developed that I think readers take Rick for granted sometimes. I guess you can credit that to great writing. If Rick is ever taken from us, you’ll hear a lot more fans saying how much they miss him.
Hmmm, check out the panel of the 3 member Carl Rescue Squad ( above). Now at first glance if I were to say that one of them would not be coming back, my guess would be Andrea. I am making this probably-out-there assumption by looking at this panel and seeing that Andrea has a black cloud over her mostly shaded head, and her horse is about to step on a skull. Now this could be a clue or a red herring, we know those happen. Just fun to see and speculate.
