The Walking Dead 15th anniversary celebration continues with the reveal of three new Bill Sienkiewicz variant covers. This year each new Walking Dead issue will come with its own Sienkiewicz variant that portrays infamous characters past and present in Bill’s gritty and realistic style. Rick and Michonne were up first, and now Carl, Andrea, and The Governor join them. Image initially announced the news with this >press release:

SICK.
Why does carl look like selena gomez?
Andrea looks like Harley Quinn becoming the Joker, Carl looks like a Victoria’s Secret model, and The Governor looks like a futuristic Robot Hitler. I will framing these for everyone to see.
The Governor one looks amazing. I like the Andrea one too a lot too. I was kinda wondering if they would end up looking too similar with the same artist but these all look unique and pretty cool.
The Carl one looks like TV Maggie (Lauren Cohan).
Carl looks like Linda Blair from the Exorcist….why is he wearing lipstick?
Exorcist 2 movie cover I mean…
Carl definitely looks like a girl & The Governor makes me think of Jon ((SHANE)) Bernthal as The Punisher… but that’s probably because I’ve been catching up on Netflix. Andrea’s cool. But it hurts… I’m still hurt.
I wasn’t feeling it at first either… but you know what? Thinking about it, Carl actually looks what he is in this cover. A KID. A teenage kid. Going back and looking at pictures of myself when I was 12-14 when I thought I was so hardcore, I can’t believe how baby faced I was. I don’t love the cover because I admittedly wanted something more badass (see #137 cover)… But Carl is very much still in that age range and it’s a pretty realistic approach to his appearance.
I get what you’re saying. It’s just that the lips are reealy reddish & effeminate. Some subtle features could’ve possibly offset that… like maybe a solid set of eyebrows. At the same time, my mind is reflecting upon kids these days having a combination of child & adult features as they transition. At least the ones I see do. Even my younger offspring has had a little light but noticeable mustache & some serious eyebrows for about a year now & he’s 15. Either way, I’m not gonna be overly critical about any other artist’s variant–it’s just that it was an immediate reaction that “Jeez, Carl sure looks like a girl!”
137’s cover is one of my all-time faves, hands down! He looks like a (male) kid & at the same time, it reflects his badassedness.
They look great!
The Governor looks like one-eyed T-Bag from Prison Break (Robert Knepper)
