Hey Skybounders,
This Tuesday, I thought you might like to get to know Skybound’s new editor, Sean Mackiewicz. Without further ado, here he is in his own words:
1- Sean, in a nutshell: what’s your story?
The highlight reel: I grew up in Plymouth, Mass, then went to college in New York City and I’ve been there ever since. I cut my teeth editing romance novels for Harlequin, then onto collected editions and monthlies at DC Comics. Now I’m here…sitting at the other end of this yellow desk from you.
2- I do feel that if Kirkman gives someone a ring, they answer… but tell me why you decided to make the leap from DC Comics to Image/ Skybound?
When I first joined DC, a Batman movie came out and the Pats had just lost the Super Bowl. History was repeating again this year, so time was obviously broken and I needed a jump start. Or, I’m always looking for new challenges and Skybound presented an incredible opportunity that I couldn’t turn down.
3- Which aspect of the Editorial Director role are you most excited to take over?
All the new, top secret books that are in development and…meeting Robert? I thought that would have happened by now. I put a lot of faith into that voice on the other end of the phone three weeks ago.
4- Nerd alert! What comics are you reading (aside from a TON of Invincible and Walking Dead)?
I’m doing a lot of re-reading right now: Love and Rockets, Casanova, All-Star Superman, the Parker adaptations, plus keeping up on everything by Johnny Negron and Benjamin Marra. Night Business is INSANELY enjoyable.
5- Where does your career ultimately take you? Do you see yourself becoming the next Axel Alonso, or do you want to pull a Mark Waid and transition into writing?
Both those guys have incredible track records, and Mark Waid’s run on The Flash is one of my favorites (I should have mentioned his amazing Daredevil before). But I’m just trying to stay in my lane for now and see where it leads. I’m just getting started.
6- There’s an HG Wells quote that goes: No passion in the world is equal to the passion to alter someone else’s draft. Where do your standards fall with that?
I’m an editor because I enjoy collaboration. A big part of my job is helping creators tell the best story possible. Sometimes you just need a lot more elbow grease.
7- And last, but not least… what, as a New Yorker, are you excited about in your transition to sunny Los Angeles!?!?
Listening to Art Leboe on the radio for a relaxing nighttime drive home. Anyone who can cue up the Isley Brothers “For the Love of You” can put you in good spot going home to see your girl.
Sean Mackiewicz sounds like a very exciting addition to the Skybound team. Look forward to seeing more from Sean.
welcome Sean! Sina, you will be missed…
So proud of you Sean!
