I’ve been a fan of John Layman for as long as I’ve worked in comics. Almost ten years ago, I started as an intern in the comic industry, just months after the launch of CHEW and it’s an understatement to say that it was one of my favorite books. I looked at it as something to aspire to in the comics I worked on and hoped that I could one day work on something like it. Over the years, John has proven time and time again that he’s one of the true geniuses of the comic industry. Able to blend comedy and action and drama together, his handle on the comic medium is second to none. When CHEW ended, I was sad to see it go, but looked forward to what came next. With that, I’m excited to say that OUTER DARKNESS is truly the follow-up that I’ve been waiting for.
With OUTER DARKNESS, John has written the same type of comic I’d have been obsessed with in those early days and to be here from the beginning is absolutely thrilling. This book captures the magic of the comic book medium in a way that few comics can these days. Blending sci-fi, horror, action and comedy into one series the way OUTER DARKNESS does is impressive. Most comics can struggle to blend just one or two, but OUTER DARKNESS has it all! There really is something for everyone in this book. You want weird-ass sci-fi monsters in your comics? We’ve got ‘em! You want the crew of a starship pushed to the brink of survival? We’ve got it! You want high stakes drama as mutinous crew members might get everyone killed? It’s there, too! This book has everything.
And it goes without saying that the book wouldn’t be what it is without the brilliant work of artist Afu Chan and letterer Pat Brosseau. Afu took John’s scripts and made them leap off the page. Whether it’s a possessed crew member puking pure evil or a giant demon powering a ship, Afu makes it all look flawless. Who knew that pure, disgusting sci-fi horror could look so damn beautiful? We’re lucky to have Afu on the book and I hope you’ll feel the same once you’ve taken a read. And what would John’s scripts be without the lettering talent of Mr. Pat Brosseau? His lettering is truly a work of art and I’m thrilled every time he finishes a new issue.
I know that you have a lot of choices when it comes to what comics you read, but let me say this: you should make OUTER DARKNESS your #1 priority. This is a special book and you’ll be glad you picked it up. It’s everything comic books should be. Make sure to let your retailer know that you want a copy when it comes out in November and in the meantime, make sure to read the attached preview!

A world of sci-fi and horror. Outer Darkness is set seven hundred years in the future, against the background of a war between humanity and a savage alien race. Mankind has mastered interstellar travel and colonized the galaxy. but during our travels into space, we’ve discovered a horrible truth. When a body dies, its spirit is cast into space, into the terrible, infinite “outer darkness”. Turns out, space is filled with spirits, ghosts, demons and all manner of necro-essences… that are lonely, scared, confused, corrupted, or just plain pissed! Demonic possession, hauntings, cosmic horror… all as commonplace on a Starship as extraterrestrial encounters and alien attacks. Outer space is terrifying.
