Skybound’s Robert Kirkman made a huge surprise appearance on this weekend’s Funko Fusion panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 to celebrate the appearance of Invincible in the hotly anticipated video game. “It’s extremely startling to see what Invincible has become,” said Kirkman. “I mean, we did the comic for 15 years and then the TV show happened. This thing that’s been around for so long is blowing up. We’ve got all kinds of games and toys and merchandise. But the most exciting thing is these Funko Pops! So I’ve enjoyed being a part of this Funko Fusion thing.”
“I love seeing all the different interpretations of these characters,” added Kirkman, “and it’s awesome being able to see all the different liberties taken and the different enhancements. Seeing Invincible characters in the iconic Funko shape, it’s just really moving. I think this game is super exciting, the things that they’ve packed into this. I mean, you’ve seen a little bit of stuff in this panel, but it is just the tip of the iceberg.”
The panel offered fans a first look at Funko Fusion‘s latest trailer, which features a host of beloved pop culture superstars battling the game’s villain Eddy, including Omni-Man…
Kirkman explained that the Funko Fusion version of Invincible can be considered a part of canon. “I can say here officially that when you have a character like Angstrom Levy giving Invincible access to the multiverse… When you’re watching the show, you can say ‘Hey, there’s another dimension where this kind of stuff’s going on!'”
Funko Fusion‘s Creative Director Jon Burton (of 10:10 Games) explained that, “Invincible’s in the game on [what] we call the ‘cameo level.’ We have worlds that you can go out and explore, they’re very expansive. Within the world there are hidden cameo levels. So we take an element of what makes, in this case, Invincible, great, and recreate the level. So this is our envisioning of the finale of Season One, where things go down between Omni-Man and Mark. You go in there and you’re there to help Mark. So you’re playing as your character and this stuff’s going on and it’s like being in the show.”
Previously, we reported that The Walking Dead‘s Rick and Michonne will also appear in Funko Fusion as bonus playable characters…
